25 days in to calving and we are 95% done.
I put it down to fixed time AI, foetal ageing and culling lates, excellent nutrition from calving to joining, some Selenium, and a bit of luck. @MizzouRepro would be proud.
@GarthGatson@Nebraskero@YPClayConry@jdknock I have an obligation to navigate the market waters as they as are today, not as I wish they were. If our business is creating real value (economically, ecologically, societally, morally, aesthetically, etc) and there are programs that help our businesses do more of that…
@GarthGatson@Nebraskero@YPClayConry@jdknock I guess my two cents is that we are all just trying to navigate distorted market conditions. I’m not sure I would create a system quite like the one we have, but I’m also not sure it makes sense to just thumb one’s nose at the structure of ag public policy.
Show-Me-Select bred heifer sales this weekend. Joplin and Kirksville last night and Kingsville today.
Enjoyed attending both the Kirksville and Kingsville sales. Would have made Joplin too if the Prather lab would ever get to work on cloning me!
Genna VanWye became the fourth graduate from my program yesterday following her MS thesis defense. Really rewarding to get to watch and support bright, hard-working individuals as they grow—not only as scientists/agriculturalists but as kind, humble human beings. Go do good!
@GarthGatson Twist is Maddux typically has them surgically castrated (a bit risky, requires ligation etc) and fed out after breeding season.
Last year carried a few to to 18+ months, collected them, and had X-sorted multi-sire units made for AI of the heifers. Will be in ‘23 NE Beef Report.
New EPA guidelines and managing reproduction in beef cattle are the focuses of two @MUExtAgEnviron events in July. Farmers will be given opportunities to learn the latest crop and livestock management practices. @ShowMeWeeds@MizzouRepro

If you find yourself with a bottle lamb to take care of and a talk to give a few hours away, you might be tempted to think “I’ll just put him in a dog crate in the back seat and take him with me.”
Let me tell you: it’s going to be orders of magnitude louder than you’re expecting
Have been thinking a lot about cowherd "foundation traits" that are SO important for commercial cow-calf profitability. Wrote a piece for @ProCattlemag that brings together some of these ideas. Check it out! https://t.co/7umNSV5X7R
