Patients assessed in chairs. Examinations conducted in waiting rooms. Care delivered in hallways, closets, and other unconventional spaces.
As overcrowding and access block continue to strain emergency departments across Canada, "chair care" is becoming an increasingly common reality. Launching the Legacy Keeper Program and First Legacy Keeper Event
The COA is launching the Legacy Keeper Program, a new initiative to preserve and share the stories, artifacts, and expertise that have shaped Canadian orthopaedics. The program creates opportunities for members to contribute to history projects, support heritage initiatives, and help safeguard our collective history.
Our first Legacy Keeper Event debuts at the 2026 Annual Meeting with the Robert W. Jackson Arthroscopy Collection, curated by medical historian Dr. Erich Weidenhammer, and presented at the upcoming Annual Meeting in St. John’s with support from Sanofi. Dr. Jackson had hoped to catalogue his collection in retirement; however, after his passing, that work is now being carried forward through a collaborative effort that highlights how artifacts connect communities and deepen our understanding of Canadian orthopaedic history.
Visit the collection in the Table Top exhibits during the Annual Meeting to explore the collection and learn about the Canadian legend behind it.
To contribute to the Legacy Keeper Program, simply add a contribution to your membership cart through your profile in the COA’s secure Membership Portal. Contact CEO, Cynthia Vezina to get involved in future Legacy events!
