The EU banned dangerous pesticides. As a result, European companies sold them to the rest of the world 🌎, and now farmers in Brazil 🇧🇷 are pleading for assistance.

As the climate crisis worsens, one of the key factors determining agriculture's future in the global south is pesticide use.

Many pesticides, including weedkillers, insecticides, and fungicides, can be used safely to protect farmers' crops from pests.

Others are known to have toxic effects that can have serious consequences for the environment, biodiversity, and the health of farmers who use them.

Over the last decade, the EU has gradually reduced, or outright banned, the use of hazardous pesticides.

Despite opposition from the chemical industry and its allied lobby groups and politicians, the EU aims to reduce pesticide use by 50% over the next seven years.

However, as Europe moves away from pesticides, a new investigation led by Lighthouse Reports reveals how public development banks - state-owned financial institutions established with taxpayer funds to support private-sector investments in developing countries - continue to finance projects that use hazardous and EU-banned chemicals.

Chemicals banned by European companies Bayer, Syngenta, and BASF have been linked to cancer, reproductive problems, and neurodegenerative diseases, which are now wreaking havoc on Brazilian farmers and Indigenous communities.

According to a new Lighthouse Reports investigation, the farms and sugarcane companies that use them supply major international corporations such as Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestle, implying that everyone on the planet has or has yet to test it through these drinks.

Meanwhile, EU taxpayer funds are being invested in projects that promote the use of these chemicals in countries such as Paraguay, Uzbekistan, and Ghana.

When these pesticides are sprayed onto fields, they are frequently picked up by the wind, resulting in "pesticide drift."

They can end up miles away from where they were applied.

Prohibited pesticides have also been discovered on limes exported from Brazil, where the first supply was delivered after being banned in Europe.

Indigenous communities claim that banned pesticides have also contaminated their drinking water.

These chemical firms insist that their products are safe.

Residents living near farms that use pesticides, on the other hand, have reported digestive issues, headaches, skin irritation, and blindness. A 2022 study found that cancer rates were higher near farms.

This is environmental racism against farmers, and it must be condemned because it has the potential to fuel genocide.

We must rise up and expose the European banks and billionaires who continue to risk our lives we deserve better than diseases and death.
