Look at who actually got excluded versus who did not. Treasury credentialed Jim Tankersley, the Times's Berlin bureau chief who normally covers Europe, while denying Alan Rappeport, the reporter who has covered this exact building for nine years and asks Bessent hard questions on a beat basis. This targets a specific reporter's access, not the paper broadly, which is precisely the fact pattern a federal judge already found unconstitutional at the Pentagon this year, a policy built to swap out the reporter who knows where the bodies are buried for one who does not. The Times's Washington bureau chief asked Treasury on Thursday to reconsider. As of this posting, they have not.
