“If you can’t read well in the early grades, your peers notice, your teacher notices, you notice. And it really starts to have negative consequences on your social emotional development & your behavior.”
@ehanford illuminates key literacy issues:

Has anyone ever asked you so where's the research supporting foundational skills in reading? How about say... 35 pages of supporting research?! That's what Student Achievement Partners has done! Thanks 4 sharing @krisbkoeller @Isaology

Heartbreaking quote from @VesiaHawkins: “We should be able to expect that a kid goes to school and learns to read, if nothing else.”
Seriously, what are we even doing? This could not be more urgent and important.

"#ICYMI: We must ensure the #ScienceofReading is part of teacher (and administrator) preparation so they are equipped with knowledge necessary to help their students learn to read.
Hear from @ehanford on how we can better prepare educators ⬇️"
"So while children may identify many words correctly in the short term, giving the illusion of proficiency, they do not build the kind of foundation that will ultimately allow them to read at an advanced level."
Great blog by Erika Meltzer.

"There's a winning formula for reading instruction! The Simple View of Reading: Decoding (Word Recognition) x Language Comprehension = Reading Comprehension
That is the #ScienceOfReading"
Only a third of students in the U.S. achieve reading proficiency. @NAEP_NCES routinely reports that “only a third of American students are proficient or better,” no matter the subject, the age of the students, or their grade level. This is why we need the #ScienceOfReading
@MrEOrtizJr @HP3potential Once you see the research, there really isn’t anything to debate, but I’m concerned that the culture within teacher prep programs isn’t close to changing, or even engaging with the research.
Hopefully the tide is starting to turn.

We played Tea for Two by @MrsJumpsClass where we were showing how to decompose numbers 0-9. My kids LOVED playing with his game! #kindergarten#KinderMath
Over 4,200 teachers attended @getyourteachon We are honored to have the opportunity to change the way teachers think about teaching and learning. Rigor is not a four-letter word and fun does not equal fluff!
These @richlandele teachers learned some great things in Dallas at the National #GetYourTeachOn conference. They celebrated our profession and were treated like the edurockstars that they are. We can’t wait to hear more about it and see the implementation!! @getyourteachon
What a privilege it was to attend the @getyourteachon National Conference! We learned so much and can’t wait to share our new learning with our @AYEThoroughbred staff next month!
Coming home from 4 days spent with over 4200 educators at the @getyourteachon Narional Conference! So much to share and even more goals to meet this year. One is to connect on multiple levels with my #wolfpack including using Twitter again. Here’s to a year of wave making!
