Sorting, counting, arrays, multiplying, place value, and efficient strategy conversations for the Mosca children today. It's amazing how motivating $$ can be - I didn't interfere or offer suggestions at all, I swear! 😊 #proudmathmom
Today we saw how @IllustrateMath instructional routines allowed students of all backgrounds and abilities to access rigorous math learning today across K-12. Pictured: deep conversations/debates over a card sort, grade 4.
On learning walks at the high school- the elementary math coordinator loved seeing the SAME routines and structures in 9-12 that her teachers are using K-4: notice/wonder, card sorts, group work, student voice. #IMK12@IllustrateMath
Algebra 1 students worked together through an activity during one of our 1st classes. Afterwards, we discussed quality group work and set class norms based on their experience #1st2days
“Ugh I hate this NEW MATH. Why don’t they teach base 60 anymore, like when we were kids?? Base 10 is so confusing!!! Why are they changing MATH????”
—Some ancient Babylonian parent, probably
“Student difficulty with mathematics has been a pervasive and systemic problem since the advent of public education- not because students can’t learn mathematics, but because, by and large, students can’t learn by being told how to do it.” @pgliljedahl 👏🏼
Do you see the error? What did he do? What does he understand? How do you think I supported him to figure it out (an almost 5th grader)? #mathMom (2/2)
Did you know: Blue Rhino propane tanks (swap at grocery store) are only filled to 15 of the 20 lbs capacity? My 10 year old at dinner: "Mom, that means you get 25% more gas when we refill at the other place!" We had a 15 min convo to help him understand his amazing error (1/2)
These are elementary school children who woke up this morning. Who ate their favorite cereal. Who tied their shoes in double knots. Who laughed with friends on the bus. Now more than a dozen are dead. This isn’t normal. It doesn’t have to be this way. It can’t keep being this way
They just went to the grocery store. Buying breakfast for their kids. Looking for fresh vegetables. Getting the ingredients for Sunday dinner. They just went to the grocery store, and now they’re gone. It’s unacceptable. It’s devastating. It’s terrorism. It’s white supremacy.
Super interesting question! In "real-life" not all problems have solutions and require iterations of partial solutions and mistakes to wiggle to a better state.... What are we teaching our students if everything we pose follows the "Given Postulate"? Hmmmmmm
@IllustrateMath , do you know of any video resources to help grade 5 teachers? They are drowning in absent and quarantined students, and are jealous of the 6-8 lesson videos. Any grade 5 teachers making vids for IM lessons already? #pleaseshare@ExploreMTBoS
People tweeting about the question of homework over the holiday break?
Y’all. I wouldn’t even give homework on a random Friday. Give the kids a break already.
