‼️OPEN LETTER TO THE COMMONWEALTH AHEAD OF YOUR MEETING ON THE SITUATION IN TANZANIA‼️

Dear Commonwealth,

As you prepare to discuss the situation in Tanzania, we urge you to consider the following.

Since your report set out the steps the Government of Tanzania must take to restore genuine democracy, and set a deadline for doing so, no such steps have been taken. The situation has continued to deteriorate.

Politically motivated prosecution. The treason case against Hon. Tundu Lissu remains before the court, despite there being no evidence that he committed treason. We have received information that President Samia Suluhu Hassan plans to have him executed. Government claims of progress in this case are misleading and are designed to prevent international action.

Enforced disappearances. Since March 7, 2026, more than 20 young people have been abducted and forcibly disappeared from various regions of Tanzania. Law enforcement has remained silent because, according to our information, security agencies are themselves responsible.

Mass terrorism charges. More than 104 young people are in prison on non-bailable terrorism-related charges. About 90% are members and leaders of CHADEMA. These charges are being used to silence dissent and intimidate critics of the Government.

Killings without accountability. In August 2026, the bodies of three young people were found dumped in Manyara Region, and four more were found in Dar es Salaam within two months. No meaningful investigation has followed, as if those killed were animals rather than human beings. In Tanga Region, Police Corporal Mwita died in police custody. Police say he hanged himself, yet injuries on his body indicate he may have been tortured.

Suppression of the media and digital rights. In August 2026, the newspaper Mwanahalisi was banned. X (Twitter), Clubhouse, Telegram, Signal and other platforms are blocked, and Tanzanians can reach them only through VPNs.

Legitimacy. We regard this Government as illegitimate because it was not elected by the people. According to information available to us, it seized power after the killing of more than 10,000 Tanzanians on October 29, 2025. The leaders of the security and law-enforcement agencies who took part remain in office, and no action has been taken against them.

We urge the Commonwealth to hold the Government to the commitments and deadline in its own report, and not to rely on assurances that events on the ground contradict.
