RUSSIA-UGANDA: We vehemently condemn Gen Museveni's recent business dealings with Russia & President Vladimir Putin, especially in light of Russia's involvement in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. We call on the U.S. gov’t to take a strong stance & condemn @KagutaMuseveni’s visit to Russia, which sends a deeply troubling message about the Ugandan regime's disregard for human rights & international principles.

It is deeply disconcerting that Museveni & his son @mkainerugaba have chosen to engage in business relations with Russia, a country facing serious allegations of human rights violations & aggression against the people of Ukraine. The situation in Ukraine demands international unity & condemnation of actions that infringe upon the sovereignty & territorial integrity of a sovereign nation.

As an organization committed to democracy, human rights, & justice, NUPUSA urges the U.S. gov’t to:

1) Condemn Gen Museveni's Visit: The U.S. gov’t must openly condemn Gen Museveni's visit to Russia & the subsequent business dealings with President Putin. This statement of condemnation sends a strong message about the need to hold individuals accountable for supporting regimes involved in human rights abuses & geopolitical aggression.

2) Review Business Relationships: The U.S. gov’t should review existing business relationships with Uganda & consider sanctions or other measures against those found to be complicit in human rights violations & dealings with problematic regimes.

3) Strengthen Human Rights Advocacy: We call on the U.S. gov’t to strengthen its advocacy for human rights in Uganda & other regions facing similar challenges. The U.S. must use its influence to support democratic reforms & respect for human rights in all international partnerships.

4) Promote Peace & Diplomacy: The U.S. gov’t should use diplomatic channels to encourage peaceful resolutions to conflicts such as the Ukrainian crisis. Advocacy for dialogue and de-escalation is crucial to maintaining global peace and stability.

5) Engage Regional Partners: The U.S. gov’t should work closely with regional partners to address the implications of Gen Museveni's actions & promote coordinated efforts to uphold human rights and international principles.

The partnership between Gen Museveni's regime & Russia is deeply troubling, especially in the context of Russia's actions in Ukraine. It undermines the principles of democracy, human rights, & international law, and further highlights the need for vigilance & decisive action against those who perpetrate or support such actions.

NUPUSA stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, & we call for a swift and strong condemnation of Gen Museveni's business relationship with Russia and President Putin. Together, we must work towards a future where accountability & justice prevail, & where all nations uphold the fundamental principles of human rights and democracy.

We remain committed to advocating for positive change & supporting the aspirations of the people of Uganda for a better future.
