When Dr. Abdul Kalam was serving as the President of India, he once visited Coonoor. During his visit, he learned that Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw was undergoing treatment at the military hospital there.

Dr. Kalam went to the hospital to meet him and enquired about his health. Before leaving, he asked, “Are you facing any difficulties here? Is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable? Do you have any complaints?”

Sam Manekshaw replied, “Yes… I do have one complaint.”

Concerned, Dr. Kalam asked, “What is your complaint?”

Manekshaw smiled and said, “Sir, my complaint is that the most respected President of my beloved country is standing before me, yet I am unable to stand up and salute him.”

Hearing this, Dr. Kalam held Manekshaw’s hand. For a brief moment, tears welled up in both their eyes.

Before Dr. Kalam left, Manekshaw mentioned another issue—he had not received the enhanced pension due to him as a Field Marshal.

The government had decided that living Field Marshals should receive full pension equivalent to that of serving Chiefs of Staff, since the rank of Field Marshal is a lifetime appointment and its holders are never considered retired.

After returning to Delhi, Dr. Kalam ensured that the matter was resolved within a week. The entire pending amount, along with arrears, was sanctioned. The Defence Secretary personally flew to Wellington, Ooty, in a special aircraft carrying a cheque of approximately ₹1.3 crore.

One great man had recognized and honored another.

But the story did not end there.

The moment Sam Manekshaw received the cheque, he donated the entire amount to the Army Relief Fund.

The Madras High Court has ruled that merely converting to Islam does not entitle a person to Backward Class Muslim (BCM) status or reservation benefits.

The court struck down a Tamil Nadu government order allowing BC, MBC and SC individuals to retain reservation benefits after conversion to Islam, holding that BCM status is available only to those born into the seven notified BCM communities.

The court said caste-based reservation benefits cannot be carried forward after changing religion.

So NGOs teaching these subjects are legally entitled to receive foreign funding.

வழக்கம்போல் தனது மகளை பள்ளிக்குச் செல்லும் வாகனத்திற்காக காத்திருந்தார் அந்தத் தாய். ஆனால் அன்றைய தினம் வந்தது, வழக்கமாக வரும் வாகனமோ அல்லது ஓட்டுநரோ இல்லை.

இதனால் சந்தேகமடைந்த அவர், அந்த நபரிடம் விசாரித்தபோது, “வழக்கமான ஓட்டுநருக்குப் பதிலாக இன்று நான் வந்துள்ளேன்” என்று அவர் கூறியுள்ளார். ஆனால் அந்தத் தாயின் மனம் அதை முழுமையாக நம்பத் தயாராக இல்லை.

உடனே அவர் வழக்கமாக வரும் ஓட்டுநரின் தொலைபேசி எண்ணுக்கு அழைத்தார். அப்போது, “நான் இன்னும் பத்து நிமிடங்களில் அங்கே வந்து விடுவேன். எனக்கு பதிலாக வேறு யாரையும் அனுப்பவில்லை” என்று அந்த ஓட்டுநர் தெரிவித்தார்.

அந்த நொடியில் ஆபத்தின் தீவிரத்தை உணர்ந்த அந்தத் தாய், தனது மகளை அழைத்துக்கொண்டு வேகமாக வீட்டுக்குள் சென்று கதவை பாதுகாப்பாக பூட்டிக் கொண்டார்.

சில நேரம் கழித்து வெளியே வந்து பார்த்தபோது, அந்த சந்தேகத்திற்குரிய வாகனம் அங்கிருந்து காணாமல் போயிருந்தது. பின்னர் அவர் உடனடியாக காவல்துறைக்கு தகவல் தெரிவித்து, அந்த வாகனம் குறித்த விவரங்களையும் வழங்கினார்.
