While on its way to explore a mysterious, metal-rich asteroid, our Psyche spacecraft sped by Mars for a gravity assist to pick up speed and adjust its trajectory. As it approached the planet, it captured this series of high-res snaps.
Vesta at its besta!
15 years ago on July 16, 2011, NASA's Dawn spacecraft entered orbit around Vesta, the second-largest body in the main asteroid belt! For more than a year, Dawn studied this unusual asteroid in depth before heading to its second destination, Ceres.
Bright blue show-offs: The bluespotted ribbontail ray is named for the striking blue spots covering their body. 🩵
They are relatively shy, but if threatened, they will stand their ground and use their venomous tail to defend themselves!
