I am a Sindhi. Most people assume that means I must be a Sanghi or a natural BJP supporter. I was born and raised in Gujarat, a state where the BJP has ruled for nearly three decades. And yet… I remain a Congressman.
This is not a comfortable position. It never has been.

When publishers become gatekeepers of ideas, authors must find their own doors.

The recent discussion around Sonia Gandhi ji’s Belonging: A Journey of Love raises a larger question about the traditional publishing industry: Who gets to decide which voices deserve to reach readers?

Large publishing houses often speak about discovering new voices, diverse perspectives and important ideas. Yet the reality for many independent authors can be very different. Editorial preferences, commercial considerations, marketability and institutional choices can determine whether a manuscript gets a chance-or simply disappears into silence.

The air itself has begun to argue.

Look around. Gen Z is no longer inheriting silence as if it were tradition. Gen Alpha is not waiting for the franchise, the syllabus, or permission. A fifteen-year-old girl speaks at a protest, is named a “cultural shock,” and then learns what a nation can do to a child when the child’s voice is inconvenient: doxxing, threats, flight from home, an apology extracted under siege. A six-year-old boy from a Patna slum walks into a BPSC agitation, looks the machinery in the eye, and says the Chief Minister should resign. They call him Gen Alpha as if the label were a joke. It is not. It is a diagnosis.

And then there is the older grammar of the same refusal. Rahul Gandhi treats another FIR the way a prisoner of conscience treats a medal—thirty-two cases, one more, no fear. That is not theatre. That is a man standing inside the cost of dissent and declining to flinch. Watch the posts. The country is already speaking the language the textbooks still pretend is impolite.

If this is not resistance, what is it? Politeness? Patriotism by silence? The old bargain that says the young may dream, but only inside the lines drawn for them?

I did not invent this hour. I only tried to name its roots.
