Delaney Hall hunger strikers demanded release of the elderly, the youth, and the vulnerable. And then release of everyone inside!
There are now NO pregnant women in Delaney Hall.
And today the high school senior is released and ready to graduate.
Some down, ALL to go!
We have secured the release of a brilliant and caring 18-year old teenage girl held in ICE custody for months.
She is now back on track to graduate from High School.
Sen. Andy Kim: "It's a choice. Delaney Hall is run by GEO Group. GEO Group is getting a nearly $1 billion contract to run Delaney Hall. They tell me there is one full-time doctor for 800 detainees. They could have more doctors if they wanted to, but that's cutting into their profits."
46 people, including press, were arrested tonight at the Delaney Hall protest. The rationale was because they had helmets, masks and shields.
That’s not justification. That’s fascism.
Thank you @RepLaMonica@RepMenendez@RepJeffries for bringing the conversation back where it belongs.
This is about the original protesters - the ones inside.
Delaney Hall's strikers demand:
#FreethemALL staring with the elderly, the youth, and the medically vulnerable.
Our community is holding ICE accountable and I want to be sure we have the tools to do so safely.
At our Know Your Rights workshop last night, @NJAIJ discussed best practices when dealing with DHS and ICE. We are in this together and we will protect each other.
This afternoon, I conducted a congressional oversight visit of the privately-owned ICE facility, Delaney Hall, in Newark, NJ.
What I witnessed and learned from discussions with detainees and officials was deeply disturbing and warrants further oversight and investigations. The medical neglect—denying people access to potentially life-saving care and withholding necessary medicine—is abhorrent.
Delaney Hall must be immediately closed and the Trump administration must cease their cruel, chaotic, and deeply inhumane immigration policies.
I saw it with my own eyes: moldy food. People needing immediate medical attention who can’t see a doctor for over a week or who can’t get their medicine.
The fact is that the Trump Administration can't get their story straight about what's going on. Delaney Hall should be closed NOW.
ICE at Delaney Hall are attacking protesters and pepper spraying a US Senator.
Enough. NJ needs to fight back. I'm sponsoring the budget resolution to boost funding for the Detention, Deportation, Defense Initiative & directly support the innocent people trapped in Delaney Hall.
My staff is on the ground at Delaney Hall following reports of retaliation against hunger strikers including pepper spraying and beating detainees.
At least two ambulances have been seen entering the facility.
This brutality must stop immediately.
I call on Leader @RepJeffries, @SpeakerJohnson, Leader @SenSchumer, and @LeaderJohnThune to demand the President and his Out Of Control DHS secretary to stand down so detainees can receive the proper medical attention.
Let’s cut through the noise from Trump’s DHS. Here’s what I saw on the ground at Delaney Hall:
1️⃣ I met with the detainees at Delaney Hall who are on a hunger strike because the food is inedible. The hunger strike is a desperate effort to improve the deplorable conditions.
2️⃣ The medical unit is too small with inadequate staff. You shouldn’t be denied care because of your immigration status. That is cruel and unusual punishment—a violation of our constitution.
3️⃣ The bottom line is there are too many people crowded into too small of a facility at Delaney Hall. This private company is making a buck off denying detainees food and adequate medical care. We need to close this facility now.
When I was at Delaney Hall this week, I heard firsthand about the cruel and inhumane reality inside. One detainee showed me horrific infected blisters on his back from scalding shower water. Another is forced to perform 40 haircuts a day, earning a measly $4 for hours of labor.
These reports today of chemical gas, threats, and violent retaliation against detainees on a hunger and labor strike are deeply troubling. @ICEgov and GEO Group cannot be allowed to hide behind a wall of secrecy and abuse, and they must end this unlawful inhumane treatment immediately.
And that's not all: Many of the detainees I met with were pursuing lawful pathways, pay taxes, and are illegally being detained by @DHSGov.
These detainees must be released immediately. I will keep returning for oversight visits until they are, and my office will continue to demand full transparency and absolute accountability.
I returned to Delaney Hall today with @RepMenendez and @FrankPallone after disturbing reports that detainees were being beaten. We confirmed that four people were taken to the hospital.
The inhumane conditions inside Delaney Hall must end. It is time to shut this facility down.
🚨I’m back at Delaney Hall, where I just heard EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS from detainees. My concern is that hunger strikers are being retaliated against, all because they were advocating for better food, access to basic medical care, and judicial hearings.
Four detainees were taken to the hospital. People are being transferred and having their hearings delayed because they’re speaking about how horribly this facility treats them.
Delaney Hall is a disgrace to our country. It must close NOW.
At Delaney Hall I met with a woman who was taken from her newborn baby, an American, who was not getting the proper medical care she needed.
This for-profit facility and Trump’s cruelty is a moral stain on our community and nation.
If conditions are really as good as you're claiming, then let my health inspectors do their jobs.
Taxpayers are footing a billion-dollar bill for this facility. They deserve transparency.
I spent two hours yesterday at Delaney Hall in Newark where 700 detainees are being held by ICE. What I saw and heard was horrific: worm-infested food, no access to medical care, no way to connect with their families.
Many of the detainees were lawful visa holders, including one 18-year-old who is missing her graduation and prom because she is being held in a cell.
This is not America. This is unacceptable, and it has to stop now.
"I have a client in 2A and he just called me terrified saying that masked ICE agents are inside the facility attacking everyone and there is blood all over the place in his unit.”
Delaney Hall and all detention facilities across the country need to be SHUT DOWN. #ICEOutofNJ NOW!
🚨‼️We are on the ground at Delaney Hall where people inside the facility are being retaliated against with pepper spray and batons.
Here is what we know:
