Bezos is right of course.

We could double taxes collected (from anyone, not just him), and it won't help the teacher in Queens. More important, it wouldn't proportionately improve the academic outcomes of their students.

The reason? Public sector teachers unions have way, way too much power, and the public school system in large districts are a jobs and political power program, not primarily a system to improve outcomes for students.

The unions would much rather have 2 mediocre dues-paying members at $65k apiece than a single exceptional employee earning merit pay at $150,000. Unions fight merit pay and common-sense performance reviews and make it way too hard to fire bad employees -- because the unions want political power, dues revenue, and membership growth.

That's why the chart looks like this. It's not that we're not sending more and more money to public schools, it's that it's being allocated in very poor ways, because of a dysfunctional approach that gives the unions WAY too much power.

Having just retired from the MTG Arena team, I find the union stuff fascinating. The public message from the union is mostly untrue in order to gin up sympathy. At the same time weak leadership led to these entitled people. This is what happens in a bad company culture.
