My father, Said Ferjani, Tunisian MP and political prisoner, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after nearly two years of unlawful pretrial detention under President Kais Saied’s authoritarian crackdown on democracy and human rights.

We, his family, reject this farcical sentence, based on baseless, trumped-up charges designed to silence critical voices. We stand in full solidarity with him and all defenders of human rights facing repression.

We are reminded by my father’s words:

“Despotism has no morals and no justice, and does not recognise any rights … We call on all free people around the world and believers in human rights and democracy to take a clear stance against oppressive authoritarianism and heinous racism, and with democracy and human rights.”

Letter to the judge

This message was written by Rached Ghannouchi on the summons’ notice which has been sent to him by the judge in one of the many cases fabricated by the authorities against him:

While expressing respect for your position as judge, I regret to inform you of my refusal to appear before you.

I sincerely wish I had been able to appear before you in person because I am completely convinced of my innocence and the party’s innocence of all allegations of secret plots and violence. I have spent half a century defending Islam’s tolerance and it’s values of justice and mercy.

I wish there was respect of the minimum standards of a fair trial, where the defendants and the judge himself/herself could feel safe, and where the law and individual conscience were the judge’s guides. However, unfortunately, judges live under threats from the highest authority in the country, because [as Saied had said,] “whoever acquits them is as guilty as them”.

The matter went beyond threats to actions and the trial of dozens of prominent figures and the best judges in Tunisia.

Therefore, I find myself forced not to attend in order to relieve you of an awkward situation and so as not to contribute to the pressure and threats to which the judges may be exposed if they were to rule fairly and acquit me and my party.

We are facing a case that concerns justice, a political case that concerns the most important party in the country, such that the judiciary is being used for political purposes and objectives.
