The Republic of Somaliland, Taiwan, and Israel’s relations represent more than shared democratic values. They point toward an emerging strategic alignment among three democratic nations positioned at critical maritime crossroads, with the United States as a natural and indispensable strategic partner.
As former President Tsai Ing-wen stated, “Somaliland and Taiwan are bonded by shared democratic values and freedoms.” Taiwan’s current president, William Lai Ching-te, has also called for cooperation with like-minded countries, including the United States, toward a “non-red Somaliland coastline.”
#Israel has taken the most significant diplomatic step by formally recognizing Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the move as being in the spirit of the Abraham Accords and pledged expanded cooperation in agriculture, health, technology, and the economy. During President Cirro’s 2026 visit to Israel, Netanyahu further highlighted Somaliland’s strategic position at the opposite end of the Red Sea, adjacent to the Bab el-Mandeb, one of the world’s most important maritime gateways.
The strategic geography is compelling. Taiwan is central to the security of the Indo-Pacific. Israel is a key U.S. partner in the Middle East. Somaliland sits at the gateway between the Gulf of Aden, Bab el-Mandeb, the Red Sea, and the Indian Ocean.
Together, these relations connect three strategically vital regions and create an emerging network of democratic partnerships around some of the world’s most important maritime corridors.
For #Washington, Somaliland should therefore be viewed not simply through the question of recognition but as a potential strategic partner in democracy, maritime security, freedom of navigation, counterterrorism, and the protection of global trade routes.
The Somaliland-Taiwan-Israel relations demonstrate how shared democratic values can evolve into strategic cooperation. The opportunity now is for the United States to recognize Somaliland’s strategic value and engage accordingly.
Somaliland stands firmly against piracy and maritime crime and remains ready to protect its coastline and contribute to security across the Gulf of Aden.
With Berbera’s strategic location and its Coast Guard capabilities, Somaliland is prepared to confront emerging maritime threats, whether from Somali piracy networks or potential Houthi-linked threats, while cooperating with regional and international partners.
Maritime security is a shared responsibility, and Somaliland is ready to play its part in protecting international shipping.
@KevinRobertsTX, President of The Heritage Foundation, has articulated a strategic case that Washington should take seriously.
His message is straightforward: U.S. policy must be “tethered to reality.” Somaliland has demonstrated decades of self-governance, democratic continuity, stability and a clear pro-American orientation, while occupying a strategically important position at the gateway to the Red Sea.
With Israel having pioneered recognition in 2025, the United States has an opportunity to follow as the second recognising state, turning an established reality into a strategic partnership.
Roberts put the policy choice plainly:
“America should proudly recognize Somaliland as an independent nation.”
The opportunity now is to move from debate to strategy: recognise Somaliland, deepen bilateral ties, and secure a stronger American position in the Horn of Africa.
Piracy in the Arabian Sea, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and the Horn of Africa has surged to unprecedented levels, with 17 piracy incidents recorded in the first half of 2026. This rise has been linked to alleged cooperation between the Houthis and Somali pirate networks, aimed at destabilizing maritime navigation in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb. Somaliland has offered assistance in efforts to combat piracy.
Somaliland’s ambitious president says his country can secure the strategic waterway by offering military bases to global powers. Tired of being ignored, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi wants outsiders to take notice https://t.co/EW3XAIAdC1

An East Africa Alliance?
Somaliland independence will be a huge news to East Africa and the free world. The soon to be sovereign country will have a coast and ports to serve two more countries: Ethiopia and South Sudan. The landlocked and "surrounded" East African countries will be able to use Somaliland's ports and coasts to have access to the Indian Ocean and Red Sea. South Sudan oil will be able to flow via pipelines via Ethiopia to Somaliland. Ethiopia will have access to ports and long coasts for commerce and military needs.
It is expected that the three East African countries could establish a security agreement for collective defense and counter terrorism partnerships between Berbera, Addis Abbeba and Juba. Israel, the UAE and the US could provide support to the Alliance.
Major development.
