One month ago, my sister sat down to speak about the books that became her friends in prison. This week, she was sentenced to life imprisonment. I cannot read this interview the way I did when it was first recorded. Every answer belongs to someone the state was already preparing to bury beneath propaganda, accusations and a faceless trial. Yet none of that is what fills these pages. Instead, they capture a woman speaking about the writers who kept her company through captivity, the ideas that sustained her, and the ordinary but revolutionary act of seeking knowledge that no prison can ever confiscate.

This verdict, which is an affront to the right to a fair trial, demonstrates how Pakistan’s anti-terrorism laws are being cynically misused to silence peaceful dissent.

PAKISTAN: Reacting to the life sentences given by Quetta’s Anti-Terrorism court to Baloch activists Mahrang Baloch and Sibghat Ullah Shah Jee on 22 June, Amnesty International said:
“This verdict, which is an affront to the right to a fair trial, demonstrates how Pakistan’s anti-terrorism laws are being cynically misused to silence peaceful dissent. The conviction and sentence followed an expedited secret trial conducted on jail premises, during which serious concerns were raised over international fair trial standards and due process. No direct evidence was presented linking Mahrang and Shah Jee to the alleged violence.”

Pamphlets were distributed in several areas of Karachi, including Mulla Essa Goth, Jam Goth, Hold Tahana, Beru Goth, Haji Murad Mitag, Aso Goth, Siddique Goth, Jahangir Road, Lalokat, Tikri Village, Lyari, Mawach, and Mauripur Stop, to raise awareness about the recent sentencing of Mahrang Baloch and Sibghatullah Shah Jee Baloch.
The aim of the pamphleting campaign was to express concern over the court’s decision and urge the public to show support for the BYC leaders, who have been detained for more than a year. Furthermore, community members were encouraged to speak out and demonstrate solidarity with the BYC leaders, whom they regard as voices of the Baloch people.

🚨 Front Line Defenders condemns the life sentence reportedly handed down to Baloch WHRD Dr Mahrang Baloch and BYC leader Sibghatullah, amid serious concerns over jail trials, video-link hearings, and fair trial standards.
The life sentences given to @MahrangBaloch_ & other BYC leaders after a faceless, sham trial in an ATC court are a grave injustice & an attack on peaceful political struggle. Attempts to silence dissent through repression will not resolve grievances, nor will they silence dissent.

𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐢 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐡, a central leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee, addressed the audience with courage and clarity at the Karachi seminar held on March 17, 2026, highlighting ongoing human rights concerns, enforced disappearances, and the continued detention of BYC leadership.
Her words echoed the pain of countless families, as well as their resilience. This is not just a call for awareness; it is a call for justice and the restoration of fundamental rights.
The struggle continues. Voices will rise. And the demand remains clear: release the detained leaders and end the Baloch genocide.

For a brief moment, it felt like justice had remembered Ali Wazir. After years of imprisonment, the news of his release brought relief to those who have watched him endure punishment simply for speaking for his people.
But within hours, he was arrested again by Sukkur Police. The state is exposing its own pathetic system where court orders can be undone the moment they disturb those who hold real power.
Ali Wazir has faced prison after prison and case after case, yet he has not been broken. If anything, his repeated re-arrests reveal something more telling: the authorities fear him far more than he fears them. Because a man who refuses to be silenced is far more dangerous to power than any accusation they place against him.
PAKISTAN: It’s been nearly one year.
Five Baloch activists, Mahrang Baloch, Bebarg Zehri, Beebow Baloch, Shah Jee Sibghat Ullah and Gulzadi Baloch, remain in unlawful pretrial detention on trumped up charges simply for their peaceful activism.
Inside Hudda Jail, Quetta, the activists are facing a secret trial in prison. They are also being denied adequate healthcare, with Mahrang’s health deteriorating significantly in detention.
Amnesty International calls on the Balochistan authorities to immediately release all Baloch activists and drop all charges against them.
