Africa’s story has been shaped by generations of leaders, freedom fighters, workers, women, youth, and communities who believed in the dream of a united, free, and prosperous continent. Every struggle, every victory, and every step toward integration has brought us to this moment.
As we commemorate #AfricaDay under the theme “63 Years of Unity, Integration and Development,” we celebrate the milestones, people, movements, and institutions that continue to shape The Africa We Want under #Agenda2063.
Follow along and celebrate with us.

📍 I had the distinct honour of delivering, today, a #lecture entitled: “Mechanisms for Maintaining Peace, Security and Crisis Management within the @_AfricanUnion” at the High War College of 🇩🇿, to an audience of Senior Officers of the National People’s Army undergoing training at this prestigious institution.
The lecture primarily focused on the key features of the continent’s security environment, the doctrinal foundations of the #AU’s peace and security framework, and its main mechanisms for conflict prevention and management across Africa. It also addressed the AU’s mechanisms for peacekeeping, monitoring, verification and compliance, as well as other AU frameworks, initiatives, and programs aimed at strengthening peacekeeping and crisis management efforts. Particular emphasis was placed on the strategic role of the @_AfricanUnion in supporting peace and security initiatives on the continent.
The rich and engaging discussions that followed contributed to a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the AU’s pivotal role in promoting peace and security in #Africa.
🤝 Finally, I commend the initiative of the Algerian Ministry of National Defense in organizing this lecture, which contributes to raising awareness of the #AU’s role within the military institution, as well as highlighting the strong commitment of the #Algerian National People’s Army leadership to peace and security across the African continent.

The transatlantic slave trade was a crime against humanity that struck at the core of personhood, broke up families & devastated communities.
Let us reject the false narrative of racial difference & fully commit to human rights, equality & the inherent worth of every person.
Statement of the Chairperson of the AU Commission on the Adoption of @UN General Assembly Resolution A/80/L.48 declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialized chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission warmly welcomes the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of resolution A/80/L.48, led by the Republic of #Ghana, declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialized chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.
The AUC Chairperson @ymahmoudali commends H.E. the President of the Republic of Ghana for this important leadership, which reflects Africa’s longstanding and principled call for the full recognition of the slave trade and its enduring consequences.
“This historic decision marks an important step toward truth, justice, and healing, and reinforces the urgent need to address the enduring legacy of slavery,” the Chairperson stated.
The AUC Chairperson reiterated the African Union’s call for comprehensive acknowledgment of the historical and contemporary impacts of slavery, including the pursuit of reparative justice, in line with #Agenda2063 and relevant Assembly decisions.

Discussions focused on strengthening financing and partnerships to ensure Africa can address its own peace & security challenges.
Over the last three years, the #AU #PeaceFund has prioritized equitable and regionally balanced utilization, reflecting the diverse security needs across the continent. 3/
This afternoon the AU Peace & Security Council engages with Dr. @DonaldKaberuka, AU High Rep. for Financing the Union and the AU Peace Fund, on greater utilization of the Fund and efforts to secure sustainable financing for peace operations in Africa.
@DonaldKaberuka emphasized the need for the AU to rely on its own mechanisms, incl., the #PeaceFund, private sector engagement and partnerships w/ financial institutions. He also stressed equitable access to UN-assessed contributions through fair burden-sharing to support African-led peace operations. 1/
