I suspect that there are different gates that consecutively bring down the numbers.

A rough speculation

1. Reduction in childhood mortality (public health improvements) and death during childbirth
2. Children move from household contributor revenue to cost center as a result of movement from rural to urban living because of industrialization and making child labor illegal
3. Movement of women into workforce and political agency driven by new urban population
4. Mass availability of Birth control
5. Duel income increasingly as requisite for “stable” middle class life
6. Internet giving illusion of unlimited never ending options
7. CoL squeeze on essentials for familial stability (vs. individual stability)
6. Trap is set

None of these are discrete events, but long arc trends over time that compound to decision schema for young men and women.

Women now have more agency than ever (good), but now even harder give to be a full time parent, even if they want to (bad).

An odd contradiction.
