NEW: Florida’s economy is rigged for the mega-rich and is pricing everyone else out.
We went to the private billionaire island where Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos escape taxes.
Working Floridians pay $13 of every $100 they earn in state taxes, while the richest pay under $3.
Four years ago I was elected as the first democratic socialist in FL in 100 years. Since then, we've delivered results on tenants' rights, fought to end corporate handouts, and won funding for safer streets. Now we're running for reelection to continue the fight to make St. Pete a city that works for everyone! We're pushing for public power, social housing, safer streets, and more. Our campaign is going to stand up to the oligarchs and bullies in Tallahassee and DC, and we won't cede an inch to them when it comes to the rights of St. Pete residents. But we can't do any of this without you! Please visit https://t.co/SS9RL0Zme2 today to donate, and sign up to learn more!
BREAKING: Tampa Bay Rays owner Stuart Sternberg has called St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch to inform him the Rays will not meet the March 31 deadline to move forward with a stadium deal.
This is a developing story. We'll keep updating.

friendly reminder that the best case scenario over the coming years is that a lot of people say "I supported Trump but this isn't what I wanted at all" and when they do that it's gonna be really, really important that we say "welcome in," not "fuck you, we told you so"
Women know that men don’t scheme to “dress like girls” to assault them.
They do it every day in broad daylight. And the ones in power protect each other to keep it quiet.
Just ask the House Ethics Committee. Or the President-elect of the United States.
Leave women alone.

“The outcome of this election will be determined by the aggregated decisions of 150 million of our fellow citizens. And that's really nerve wracking. Honestly, it can be sort of terrifying. But it is also the whole point of democracy,” says @chrislhayes.
We have a choice between keeping things relatively the same or getting dragged backwards.
The status quo is awful for so many of us and yet it can get so much worse.
That's why I voted for @KamalaHarris
I’ve been all over the country in the last month.
And I get asked the same question, over and over again:
“I disagree with Kamala’s position on the war in Gaza. How can I vote for her?”
Here is my answer:
Blackstone is now the largest corporate landlord on Earth with over 300,000 homes in the U.S.
Billionaires and corporations have bought millions of homes and either raised rents or left them as empty investments.
There are 16 million vacant houses—28 for every homeless person.
A daily reminder that an immigrant didn’t steal your wages or take away your pension. A billionaire did. During the last 50 years, more than $50 trillion in wealth has been redistributed from the bottom 90% to the top 1%. That’s trillion with a t.
Giving out free gas after a hurricane ignores the basic economic principle of supply and demand. Price signals serve a purpose—they allocate resources efficiently. When you eliminate them, you create shortages, waste, and chaos. Instead of handouts, focus on getting gas to stations and let prices do their job, ensuring it goes to those who need it most, not just those who get there first.
Foot Locker announced its global headquarters would relocate to St. Petersburg less than a month after the Tampa Bay Rays received approval to reimagine the Historic Gas Plant District.

@Reimagine175 There are some restrictions in Florida that wouldn't allow a Vancouver style vacancy tax, but yes there are creative workarounds. The city could also more aggressively enforce existing prohibitions on short term rentals.

For Buying up the Bay, Part 5 - we spent months analyzing statewide property data to see how many Florida homes are owned by corporate investors. We found more than 117,000.
See where they are, and what this means for the state: https://t.co/j7zu3kR5Ar via @TB_Times
