Despite the AAR’s assurances, the absence of accidents doesn’t imply safety, it merely masks the underlying risks waiting to derail at the next bend. While they boast of fuel efficiency, they overlook the potential catastrophe a single long-train derailment could entail. It’s not just about managing routine operations seamlessly; it’s about ensuring minimal damage during irregularities. The AAR’s resistance to data collection only muddies the waters further. Let’s not wait for a calamity to prove the point; a 7,500-foot limit is a step towards prudent safety, not an overcaution.
