Homicide versus Femicide!! How many men and women in Kenya are victims of murder annually?

From 2014 to 2021, three to five times more men than women have been victims of murders.

Murder perpetrators by sex: This is a follow-up post that aims to provide more context on the nature of male and female homicides in the country.

First, worth noting is that both men and women can be perpetrators of violence and murder, with the difference being proportionality. This means anywhere you go in the world, men will be overrepresented as victims and perpetrators of homicides.

The chart below shows persons who were reported to have committed murder between 2019 and 2022. Men are overrepresented five to nine times. In the same time span, women are reported to commit, on average, roughly 200 murders annually.

Is this unique to Kenya? The chart below shows the distribution of homicide offenders in the United States. Like in Kenya, we notice that despite the existence of female offenders, men are overrepresented around 8 times.

What about femicides?
The discussion on femicides is a little interesting for one reason. The misunderstanding in the debate is based on a technicality that is very difficult to solve. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to tell whether a person was killed solely for their gender or if there were other motivating reasons. If a woman kills a man for cheating on him with another woman, was the man killed for his gender? What about the reverse?

For example, we see that in 2022, around 198 women were reported for murders. The question that arises is, who did these women kill? Did they kill other women? Did they kill men? If they killed women, is this an instance of femicide? If they killed men, other than being a homicide, what else should we call it?

Similarly, in the same year, 1,744 men were reported for murders. We can ask the same questions. Who did these men kill? (At least, we can say, most killed other men), Did some of them kill women? And if they killed women, for what reason? Their gender or other motivating factors?

Worth noting is that murderers, both male and female, are an enemy to everyone. The male versus female debate doesn't help at all. No man would want to be a victim of a female murderer same way no woman would want to be a victim of a male murderer. Saying men are killing women takes away the responsibility from actual murderers, further perpetuating the problem we are trying to solve. To understand how obnoxious this debate is, see the chart below. Imagine aliens came out and started saying, "Women are killing children." How accurate would that be?
