A flâneur is someone who wanders without a fixed destination, following whatever catches his interest.
This concept applies in all facets of life too.
Wander intellectually: Jobs took calligraphy for no practical reason; years later it shaped the Mac.
Wander professionally: Stewart Butterfield tried to build games; the failed projects became Flickr and later Slack.
Wander geographically: Howard Schultz walked into Milanese espresso bars and came home with a different vision for Starbucks.
Wander socially: Johnny Cash and June Carter literally bumped into each other in the aisle of a show.
Wandering also requires bandwidth.
Time to take the strange meeting. Money to survive the side project. An open weekend to go somewhere. A career and geography you can still change. Enough mental space to follow a curiosity before knowing what it’s “for.”
Exposure increases the surface area for luck. Slack gives you the ability to capture it.
Too much optimization kills both
@DissidentSouth@col_a_buendia I played travel sports almost year round (not summers). I didn’t miss going to church a single weekend. Saturday nights at 5pm. 3 different masses on Sunday to go to. Can make it work. Can’t be lazy though I agree
@col_a_buendia And yet you assumed families who play travel sports aren't there every Sunday. That's precisely my point. You expect others not to question your faith while making sweeping judgments about theirs
