Amnesty International is deeply concerned over the safety and liberty of human rights defender and Executive Director of RULAAC, Okechukwu Nwanguma who had been receiving threats connected to exposing atrocities at the notorious Tiger Base police detention centre located at Owerri Imo state.

Also receiving similar threats is Nonso Nkwa, Owerri-based independent radio broadcaster and activist who has also been receiving threats for his work — that is exposing shocking human rights violations at Tiger Base.

The safety and security of Okechukwu Nwanguma and Nonso Nkwa is now at risk. They are brave human rights defenders fighting for justice and accountability. Threatening them for exposing injustice is unacceptable.

This dangerous pattern of harassment and
intimidation must be investigated. Human rights defenders, whistleblowers, and journalists continue to be threatened, harassed, and in some cases detained for speaking up against human rights violations, systemic corruption, or publishing dissenting views.
