This is your brain on sleep deprivation.
Scientists in Canada launched the largest study on how lack of sleep affects the brain.
They created games that tested skills like reasoning, language comprehension & decision making.
They had one participant repeat these tests in an MRI machine.
Here's what they found:
On the left is a normal night of sleep.
On the right is when it's deprived of 4 hours of sleep.
The colored areas are the activity happening in your brain. Notice the lack of activity on the right side.
Researchers found there was less activity in the frontal & parietal lobes, which are crucial for decision making, problem solving & mood control.
You are simply not at your best when you don't get enough sleep.
Another study done at the University of Oslo found that lack of sleep leads to reduced clearance of substances from the brain.
These substances are many of the same waste products that are seen to accumulate in the brains of Alzheimer's patients.
Some recent studies suggest that poor sleep contributes to higher levels of beta-amyloid protein in the brain, which lead to the amyloid plaques found in the Alzheimer's brain.
If you want a healthy brain avoid long term sleep deprivation.
What should you do?
• When deprived of sleep avoid making big decisions & pause before reacting to an emotion.
• Fix your sleeping habits. If you can't get enough hours, focus on increasing your sleep quality to make up for it.
Sleep is the best legal performance enhancing drug on the planet.
Make it a priority now so you can protect your brain for later.
WHEN PARENTS GET OLD ... Let them grow old with the same love that they let you grow ...
Let them speak and tell repeated stories with the same patience and interest that they heard yours as a child ...
Let them overcome, like so many times when they let you win ...
Let them enjoy their friends just as they let you …
Let them enjoy the talks with their grandchildren, because they see you in them ...
Let them enjoy living among the objects that have accompanied them for a long time, because they suffer when they feel that you tear pieces of this life away ...
Let them be wrong, like so many times you have been wrong and they didn’t embarrass you by correcting you ...
LET THEM LIVE and try to make them happy the last stretch of the path they have left to go; give them your hand, just like they gave you their hand when you started your path! (“Honor your mother and father and your days shall be long upon the earth”.) - God
Surprised how few people know this little “hack” for giving salbutamol down your asthmatic or COPD patient’s ET tube… 🫁
All you need is a 50ml syringe & their inhaler (disclosure - not my idea!)

.@fordnation I think my wife and RN’s across the province are worth a lot more than a 1% raise. Here she is ready to walk to work in this blizzard knowing she may be forced to be there more than the scheduled 12 hours of her shift…
I keep seeing people posting pictures of empty shelves of cough and cold medicines to make a point.
Without comment on why shelves are empty, here is my reminder that you shouldn’t use them in kids. They are ineffective, have side effects and waste $.
