I'm relieved that Imran Riaz Bhai and his family are safe, as the situation for journalists in Pakistan has become increasingly dire. After the regime change, my husband Arshad Sharif was brutally killed, and in 2024 alone, 11 journalists lost their lives. This authoritarian regime has utterly failed to protect journalists, and with the implementation of PECA law, the situation will only worsen. Israel Blocks Vital Supplies to Combat Rat Infestation in Gaza, Endangering Health and Safety

A new document shared by the Gaza Relief Committee, an informal group representing thousands of displaced Palestinians in central Gaza and acting as a liaison between them and humanitarian organizations, highlights widespread rat infestations in refugee camps and hospitals. These infestations pose severe health and safety risks, especially for displaced families.

Key findings include: 👇🏼

➤ Health Threats: “It is not the pain of the bite that concerns me, but rather the dangerous diseases these fatal creatures spread.”
Rats are spreading diseases that pose a serious risk, with the potential to spark an epidemic and cause widespread fatalities.

➤ Impact on Children: “Have mercy on the frail bodies of our children. There is no dignity for humanity when rats are attempting to tear into the body of an infant.”
Vulnerable children are suffering painful rat bites, leading to wounds, infections and potential long-term health issues.

➤ Food Contamination: Rats are attacking food supplies in refugee tents, contaminating the only meals many displaced people have.

➤ Hospital Conditions: In hospitals and health centers, rats are invading patient wards, filling windows and vents with droppings, making the environment dangerously unsanitary for recovery and treatment.

➤ Desperate Plea for Aid: “Everyone here knows that these creatures have grown fat from the remains of our bodies lying under the rubble and in the streets, which remain there for days.”

The Gaza Relief Committee is urgently calling for international help to send resources to combat the rat infestation before it leads to a public health disaster.
