Interestingly autofluorescence and functional fluorescence couple differently to guided modes in the tapered fibers, probably because of the different refractive index of the medium where they are generated (the silica in one case, the brain in the other)

It takes a modern bend on analysis of parallel loops through the basal ganglia (building on such classic work by Peter Strick and others) to show separate action linked channels through multiple BG nuclei
3/n Then exploiting my favorite technology (tapered fibers @OptogeniX ) he can compare in a single animal the effect of stimulating these separate pathways. The link between anatomy and functional effect is clear.
