제가 개발한 스마트폰 중에 두 번째로 힘들었던 프로젝트가 LG G4 였습니다.

G4 는 외관에 두 가지 큰 특징이 있었는데, 이 특징들 때문에 개발이 너무 힘들었습니다.

첫 번째는 커브드 디자인입니다.
바나나처럼 살짝 말려있는 디자인이죠. 커브드 디자인이 LG에서 처음은 아니었습니다. G Flex 시리즈라고 해서, G4 이전에 G Flex 와 G Flex 2 가 있었습니다. 다만 해당 시리즈의 제품들이 플렉서블 디스플레이를 사용한 것과 달리 G4 는 LCD 디스플레이를 강제로 휘어서 만든 제품입니다.
외관은 휘어져 있는데, 내부 부품들은 모두 평평하다보니 문제가 참 많았습니다. 특히 PCB는 평평한데, 곡률이 있는 body 에 맞추다보니 조립하면서 PCB가 휘어지는 구조였죠. 당시에는 RF 를 담당하고 있었는데, PCB가 body 와 잘 컨택이 된다는 가정으로 안테나들을 설계하였습니다. 하지만 곡률 때문에 컨택이 잘 되지 않아서 성능편차가 너무 심했습니다. (RF 개발하는 사람들한테는 그라운드 컨택이 생명입니다.) 또한 body 는 열을 분산시켜주는 발열의 창구 같은 역할도 하는데, 접촉이 잘 되지 않다보니 발열문제도 많았었죠.

두 번째 큰 특징은 가죽 커버입니다.
진짜 가죽을 사용한 스마트폰을 보신적 있으신가요?
업계에선 최초로 진짜 천연 가죽을 배터리커버에 적용하였습니다. 이때부터 가죽과 인연이 시작되었는지도 모르겠습니다 ㅎㅎ
디자인적으로는 괜찮은 악세서리였지만, 종류가 너무 많아서 개발팀은 죽을맛 이었습니다.
전도성 재질이 전혀 없기 때문에 일반적으로는 가죽커버가 성능에 영향을 주지는 않습니다.
그걸 알더라도 대기업에서는 모든 것을 측정하고 평가를 해야 됩니다. 그것이 수십년간 쌓아온 프로세스이고 대기업 품질들의 노하우이죠. 계속해서 새로운 가죽커버가 개발팀으로 전달이 되었는데, 새로운 가죽커버를 받을 때마다 엣지케이스들을 모두 확인해야 했습니다. 그 때는 정말 상품기획하고 소재개발하는 사람들이 원망스럽더라구요.

고생해서 개발했지만, 판매량이 부족해서 많이 아쉬운 제품이었습니다. 사실 LG가 판매량이 많은 스마트폰이 없기도 하지만요 ㅎㅎ
