Sokoro 254 and the Deadly Folly of Celebrating “Goon” Purges

TikToker Sokoroh 254 is busy celebrating the extrajudicial killing of Cecil Ouma, calling it a righteous purge of “problematic elements” in society.

He clearly does not understand how dangerously thin and flexible the definition of a “goon” becomes when it is left in the hands of illiterate, brutal, colonial-trained enforcers of the regime like the Kiganjo D(minus) DCI killer goons headed by Michael Sang and Eliud Lagat.

History has already shown us this movie.

When John Njoroge Michuki and the overrated but catastrophic Mwai Kibaki regime set out to “eradicate” the Mungiki sect - a grouping born directly from the deliberate economic disenfranchisement and destruction of youth livelihoods by the geriatric fossils who view young people as cannon fodder in the war of attrition, the same old geezers gravitating around the corrupt United Opposition led by Rigathi Gachagua - the criteria for elimination was often as arbitrary as having dreadlocks.

That single visual marker was enough to get young men gunned down in the Mount Kenya and Nairobi region.

Sokoroh, who proudly rocks dreadlocks and walks freely in town today, seems blissfully unaware that he benefits from the very resistance that challenged and eventually dismantled that kind of profiling.

Just slightly over 15 years ago, it was effectively illegal for a Kenyan man to have dreadlocks. The fight against that blanket criminalization is what allows him the freedom to create content without immediate fear of being labelled a threat and eliminated.

As a Gen Z content creator, he appears dangerously disconnected from this history. He can shoot videos while drunk or under the influence, pushing reckless opinions without pausing to consider their impact.

Celebrating state-sponsored killings today is not just irresponsible - it is suicidal for his own generation. The same machinery he cheers can easily be turned against him or his peers the moment the regime changes the definition of “problematic.”

The line between “goon” and ordinary youth is not fixed by justice or evidence. It is whatever the state and its enforcers decide it is in the moment. Sokoroh should be far more cautious before helping to normalise extrajudicial violence.

He owes the public - especially the youth he claims to speak for - a full, public apology and a complete recantation of his dangerous rhetoric before the end of business today.

Words like these do not disappear. They help build the psychological foundation for more killings.

This is not a game. It is a matter of survival.
