Treason charges are becoming a political weapon against opposition leaders across Africa.

In country after country, opposition figures are arrested, prosecuted or threatened with treason charges after challenging those in power.

African governments must respect political freedoms, due process and the right of citizens to organise and challenge those who govern them.

When treason charges become a shortcut for dealing with political opponents, democracy itself is put on trial.

Eight medical interns have been remanded to Luzira Prison after police arrested them while they tried to deliver a petition to Parliament. Police arrested the eight, seven men and one woman, along Parliamentary Avenue on August 12 as they protested delayed deployment and what they describe as a discriminatory payment structure for the 2026/2027 internship intake.

The interns appeared before Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court, where prosecutors charged them with being a nuisance on a public road. The court remanded them to Luzira. They return to court on Monday.

At the centre of the standoff is the National Education Training for Health Policy, which classifies internship as training rather than employment and removes allowances for privately sponsored graduates. The Ministry of Health says internship continues medical education but the Uganda Medical Association and Federation of Uganda Medical Interns (FUMI) argue that interns provide a major share of frontline healthcare and need support for food and accommodation to work safely. The Ministry has ordered interns to report to their assigned facilities by August 15 or risk losing their placements.

FUMI rejects the directive, arguing that sending unpaid interns into hospitals puts both their welfare and patient safety at risk. The Uganda Medical Association has given the Ministry 14 days to resolve the dispute and warned of a nationwide doctors’ strike if it fails.
