For the first time, the AHA/ASA Guidelines include pediatric stroke, a major step toward ensuring all stroke centers are prepared to care for children. Thanks to IPSO members Drs. Nestor Gonzalez, Peter Sporns, and Heather Fullerton for their contributions! @AHAScience
For the first time, the 2026 Guideline for the Early Management of Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke include recommendations for interventional treatment in pediatric patients with AIS.
Although much work remains to adapt prehospital and hospital stroke protocols for pediatric patients, expert consensus and recent studies highlight the importance of early stroke recognition in children and support the safety and potential benefit of endovascular interventions in select pediatric patients with AIS.
These recommendations serve as a foundation for future recommendations and address the phases of pediatric acute stroke care.

🧵#STROKE Highlights for September are here:
🌟In a pooled case-control study across 45 centers, EVT in pediatric large-vessel stroke was linked to markedly better functional outcomes than BMT without higher bleeding risk.
#STROKE: Pediatric patients with anterior circulation stroke and low ASPECTS who received thrombectomy had significantly better functional outcomes than those treated with medical management alone. #AHAJournals https://t.co/rqdIs35rS8
🚨 Game-changer in #PedsStroke!
New paper shows mechanical thrombectomy > medical management in kids w/ acute ischemic stroke. Not on this one (ugh!) but love the brilliant team who made it happen ❤️
And @PSporns —your announcement was 🔥👏

For patients with symptomatic acute occlusions of the internal carotid artery below the circle of Willis, both endovascular and best medical treatments prove to be effective and safe options, offering promising outcomes. 🧠 @MeyerL_MD

Fantastic @TENSIONtrial results! Thrombectomy in stroke with extended lesion and extended time window resulted in better functional outcome using a simple diagnostic algorithm using predominantly plain CT!
What‘s the best technique for distal occlusions? #MeVO#DMVO#Stroke
