Confucian Thought and Its Enduring Influence on Contemporary China
On July 19, 2026, the Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University hosted a cultural lecture titled "Confucius and the Influence of Confucian Thought on Contemporary China" at Khwopa College, Nepal. The lecture was delivered by Sarbotam Shrestha, Council Member of the South Asian Sinologists Council, renowned Nepali translator, and senior Sinologist, attracting more than 150 law faculty members and students.
Drawing on his extensive research in Sinology and his academic experience in China, Shrestha introduced the life of Confucius and traced the enduring legacy of Confucian thought. He explored key Confucian concepts—including benevolence (Ren), ritual propriety (Li), governance by virtue and benevolent rule, the Mandate of Heaven, and Confucian educational philosophy—while examining their contemporary relevance and China's ongoing efforts to preserve and develop its rich traditional culture.
By comparing Confucian thought with South Asian philosophical traditions and Nepal's indigenous ethical values, Shrestha highlighted the shared cultural and moral principles that connect China and Nepal. His engaging presentation sparked enthusiastic discussion among participants.
During the interactive session, faculty members and students exchanged views on topics such as Confucian educational philosophy, family ethics, and harmony between humanity and nature, while reflecting on their relevance to contemporary Nepalese society.
The South Asian Sinologists Council remains committed to advancing China–Nepal academic and cultural exchanges, deepening understanding of China's traditional philosophical heritage, and fostering dialogue among civilizations.
