In the 1990s, millions of Indian families sat in front of bulky, boxy television sets to watch Sunday morning shows, completely unaware of the logo stamped on the glowing cathode ray tube inside.

Fast forward 2 decades: when an Indian Air Force pilot pulls 9g maneuvers at 40000 feet in a Su-30MKI fighter jet, the high-tech cockpit display guiding his missiles did not come from a European defense contractor. It was engineered by the exact same company that made our childhood TV screen.

If you owned a BPL / Onida / Videocon television set in India during the 1980s / 90s, you were looking through Samtel glass. Samtel built a massive industrial empire buying sand in Rajasthan, melting it into glass & manufacturing millions of CRTs every yr.

Then came the mid-2000s flat screen revolution. LCDs & LEDs wiped out CRT picture tubes almost overnight. Virtually every picture tube factory on Earth went bankrupt / closed its doors.

Rather than shuttering their factories, Samtel realized that while consumer electronics had moved to cheap household LCDs, military air forces worldwide faced a massive hardware bottleneck.

A standard living room screen dies instantly in a fighter jet cockpit. The physics requirements for supersonic military displays are brutal:

- At 40000 feet above the cloud line, ambient sunlight is blinding. A standard screen washes out completely. Military displays require ultra bright backlight engineering that remains readable under direct equatorial sunlight.

- At high altitudes, ambient cockpit temperatures can drop to -40 degrees C. Standard liquid crystal displays freeze solid into useless black sludge. Samtel engineered internal thermal heating layers that keep the liquid crystals fluid at subzero temperatures.

- During violent 9g dogfights / hard runway landings, aircraft components suffer brutal G-force spikes. Samtel ruggedized the glass to frame bonding to absorb violent impacts w/o flickering / cracking.

Samtel partnered with HAL to form Samtel HAL Display Systems (SHDS), India's 1st public-private defense avionics venture.

Today, they manufacture:

- Multi Function Displays (MFDs): The primary color screens inside the cockpits of the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, Tejas LCA Mark 1A & Mirage 2000 upgrades.

- Head-Up & Helmet Displays: High-precision optical units that project tactical flight data, missile lock-on cues & synthetic horizon lines directly in front of the pilot's eyes.

The visionary behind this survival pivot was Satish Kumar Kaura, an EE grad from IIT Kanpur(1966) & Carleton University, Canada. Returning to India in 1973, Kaura founded Samtel & grew it into a TV picture-tube powerhouse, becoming the 1st ever recipient of IIT Kanpur’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1989 & receiving the Padma Shri in 2004.

When flat screens threatened to erase his life's work, Kaura leveraged his deep R&D roots, even co-establishing the Samtel Centre for Display Technologies back at his alma mater, IIT Kanpur to steer the company away from consumer electronics & re-engineer it into a premier defense avionics powerhouse.

Remember, the exact company that spent the 1980s ensuring Indian households could watch b&w evening news now builds the ruggedized glass displays & electronic eyes keeping supersonic fighter jets locked on target.
