Very few predictions in technology last 25 years. In 2000, only 2yrs into Google, Larry Page predicted the company's #1 priority a quarter century later.
Watch this ~1min clip.
"Artificial Intelligence would be the ultimate version of Google. If we had the ultimate search engine, it would understand everything on the web. It would understand exactly what you wanted and it would give you the right thing and that's obviously artificial intelligence to be able to answer any question basically because almost everything is on the web, right?
We're no where near doing that now however we can get incrementally closer to that and that's basically what we work on. And that's tremendously interesting from an intellectual standpoint, right? We all this data. If you printed out our index it would be 70 miles high. We have all this computation, we have 6000 computers. So we have a lot of resources available. We have enough space to store 100 copies of the whole web.
So if you have a really interesting confluence of a lot of different things, right? Lot of computation, lot of data. That didn't used to be available. And from an engineering and scientific standpoint, building things to make use of this is a very interesting intellectual exercise.
So I expect to be doing that for a while."
Founders cannot outsource recruiting.
âRecruiting is the most important thing because you need creativity; you need motivated people. Ideally, the early people are all geniuses. Theyâre self-managing, low-ego, hardworking, highly competent, builders, technicalâmaybe one or two sellersâbut you canât watch everything. You canât micromanage everything.
The early people are the DNA of the company. When you outsource recruiting, when you have other people hiring and interviewing and making hiring decisions without your direct involvement and veto, thatâs a sad day. Thatâs the day that the companyâs no longer being driven directly by you.
Thereâs now a fly-by-wire element in between. Thereâs some mechanical linkage going through another human, often at a distance. And other people are not going to have the same level of selectivity that you will as a founder.
The important size at which a company starts changing is not some arbitrary number, like 20 or 30 or 40. Itâs the point at which the founder is not directly recruiting and managing everyone. The moment that there are middle layers of management, then you are somewhat disconnected from the company, and your ability to directly drive a product team that can take the company from zero to one goes away.
So we really cannot outsource recruiting. People think you can. They hire recruiters, for example. Maybe you can outsource a little bit of sourcing, but I would even argue thatâs difficult. The reason recruiting is so, so, so importantâand a lot of it is obvious, Iâll skip the obvious reasonsâbut one non-obvious reason is that the best people truly only want to work with the best people.
Working with anyone whoâs not at their level is a cognitive load upon them. And the more people theyâre surrounded by who are not as good as they are, the more keenly theyâre aware that they belong somewhere else, or they should be doing their own thing.
The best teams are mutually motivated. They reinforce each other. Everyoneâs trying to impress each other.
One good test is when youâre recruiting a new person, you should be able to say to them, âWalk into that room where the rest of the team is sitting. Take anyone you wantâpick them at randomâpull them aside for 30 minutes, and interview them. And if you arenât impressed by them, donât join.â
When you do that test, you will instinctively flinch at the idea of them interviewing randomly a certain person thatâs kind of in the back of your mind. Thatâs the person you need to let go. Because thatâs the person keeping you from having this high-functioning team that all wants to impress each other.â
You need to make people trust you and your mission.
Communicating your mission well to VCs will get you funding, and to great engineers will help you build the best team.
Smart people will smell greatness from a distance too, so you donât need to sellâjust communicating your mission should be enough.
@paulg Disciplined investment is the way to go for retail investors. This is the best strategy to average out your risk.
For value investors who understand deeply, they might be able to sense peaks and bottoms in the market (though they have to be lucky to be right).
@arpit_bhayani Almost everything is a distraction. So, at least in the startup world, the founder who can filter noise, put on blinders, and focus on the top priority will definitely succeed. This applies to many things in life.
@Nithin0dha Let users set a key in their X profile, which X includes at the top of all their communications to verify authenticity.
Any social media platform can implement this. Indian banks use a similar method on their website login pages.

Shreyan Ray (Dominater069) just became India's first Legendary Grandmaster (>3000 rating) on competitive coding platform Codeforces.
Only 60 people hold this rank and ~100 have ever achieved it, most of whom are Chinese.
#40 in the world of ~100k people.
I can sum up my entire life in two things: my brain, developed over time, and my net worth, accumulated over time. Thirty years reduced to just two things.
