Azerbaijan’s “Russiagate” Hoax
Aliyev Afraid of Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno Karabakh

Just as the “Russiagate” hoax is being debunked in the USA, Azerbaijan manufactures a new one. “Russian agents” are responsible for overwhelming parliamentary support in Bern for the Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno Karabakh – so charges Azerbaijan.

CSI recently came across a video report produced by a state-controlled Azerbaijani news agency. It claims to have uncovered Russia’s infiltration of the Swiss Parliament, successful to the point that the Kremlin was able to manipulate a majority of the parliamentarians to support the Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno Karabakh. It speaks of Swiss parliamentarians having formed a “situational alliance” with Russia.

The cast of Russian assets, Azerbaijan says, includes the Christian People’s Party (dissolved in 2020), a set of 19 Swiss parliamentarians from various parties, the Geneva-based World Council of Churches, the Swiss Protestant Church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, former Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian, Christian Solidarity International (CSI), Armenia’s Social Democrat Hunchakian Party and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation.

The Swiss Peace Initiative calls for Switzerland to convene an internationally supervised forum for dialogue between Azerbaijan and representatives of the forcibly displaced Armenian Christians. Its goal is the establishment of conditions for their return with fundamental human rights intact.

Aliyev’s “Russiagate” hoax shows the depth of his fear. If successful, the Swiss Peace Initiative would upend his ethno-religious cleansing project for the permanent removal of Armenian Christians from their homeland in Nagorno Karabakh.

The prospect of the return of the Armenian Christians to Nagorno Karabakh, no matter how remote, is a cause of anxiety not only to Azerbaijan dictator, but also to those belonging to his own well-financed global influence networks.

Echoes of Aliyev’s “Russiagate” hoax can even be heard in Armenia and as far away as the USA.

The body of Krikor Ashnaklian, a 25-year-old Syrian-Armenian medical student from Aleppo, has been found in Germany, according to a statement from the Leipzig Police Department. Ashnaklian had been missing since July 19, 2024, with his last known phone contact with his family occurring on that day.

Following months of extensive search efforts, authorities confirmed that a body discovered on April 5, 2025, in the Trebelshain district of Wurzen has been identified as Krikor Ashnaklian. Based on current investigations, police report that there is no indication of foul play.

Ashnaklian had moved to Germany eight months ago to continue his medical studies. He was described by those who knew him as intelligent, sociable, and a person of strong moral character.

The Armenian community, along with Krikor’s family and friends, mourns his loss as they await further details.
