The resistance of bacteria to antibiotics (AMR) claimed 5 million lives in 2019.
@WHO urged countries to develop national plans on AMR.
100+ countries responded but no analysis of these plans exist.

Over one million people a year die as a result of antimicrobial resistance.
The Fleming Centre will drive a global movement to tackle it.
Proud to become Patron of the appeal to create this vital centre, which will educate, inspire and catalyse action to solve this problem.

Incredible new study from @Patel_Jay_ mapping the pandemic treaty elements @alexandraphelan and I outlined onto 43 states' priorities. Outbreak containment & medical countermeasures dominating; human rights & adaptive governance trailing https://t.co/27HboNxgQC
Complex patterns driving antimicrobial resistance.
Beyond antimicrobial consumption, poverty reduction, social development, and improved governance should inform national planning.

Efforts to control #antimicrobialresistance vary significantly around the world. Reviewing 114 countries, a recent report led by @Patel_Jay_ in @TheLancetInfDis finds a need to improve both methods and accountability for combatting #AMR. https://t.co/wJuiCs0APP

We generated insights across key components of AMR governance for cross-country learning and improvement in the national, regional and global responses. With thanks @devisridhar @Wellcome_AMR | @HananBalkhy@UKAMREnvoy

Policy responses and strategic commitments were varied (strongest in Norway, UK, US; weakest in Micronesia, Barbados, and Sierra Leone).
Globally, responses did not appear commensurate with the current and predicted health and economic burden of AMR.
Preventing firearm injury should garner bolder action. It's time to end the cycle of grief.
Honored to partner with @Patel_Jay_, @IHME_UW Prof. Mohsen Naghavi, Dr. Gwenetta Curry, and Prof. @devisridhar on this new viewpoint in @TheLancetPH https://t.co/P2YzRix0aN
We are beginning to learn of the pandemic’s effect on antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Our @LancetMicrobe Comment shows that a renewed focus on AMR is needed to prevent a pandemic legacy becoming more damaging than Covid itself. @devisridhar

Today @PNASNews published one of the most important studies I've conducted. We asked: do international treaties produce the effects their negotiators intended? The short answer is "no".
Here I will try to summarize almost 10 years of work in 10 tweets.🧵 https://t.co/4eGQ2P24Rj
🇺🇸 Drug-resistant hospital infections and deaths ↑15% in 2020.
CDC report among the first to quantify the impact of Covid on antibiotic resistance. We need a renewed urgency on AMR to resist a pandemic legacy more damaging than Covid itself.
