Hands-on MRI sessions were conducted for the participants by Tanya, during which they learned to design a cognitive paradigm using PsychoPy and explored how these paradigms can be incorporated into their respective research areas. Jitender Ahalawat, introduced participants to the basics of MRI, including its fundamental principles, usage, and applications in neuroimaging research.
A day of lectures, discussions and practical learning connecting cognitive science with neuroimaging approaches.

Congratulations to Dr. Soumya Iyengar and team at BRIC-NBRC on their latest publication in Communications Biology.
The study reveals how somatostatin-positive (SOM+) interneurons in the human auditory cortex develop from the prenatal stage to adulthood, uncovering layer-specific maturation patterns that provide new insights into cortical plasticity.

Inspired after attending the BRICS Neuroscience Meeting at @iitmadras SGBC. A major highlight was the launch of India's Human Brainstem Atlas—an achievement that places India among a select group of nations undertaking neuroscience projects at this scale.
BRIC-NBRC researchers are presenting their work at BRICS 2026 Neuroscience, IIT Madras (June 5–7, 2026), through posters, invited lectures, and featured talks.
This participation showcases NBRC’s active role in advancing neuroscience research and engaging with the global scientific community at a key international forum. BRICS neuroscience symposium has stalwart neuroscientists from 9 nations including Brazil, Iran, South Africa, India and others.

Proud to share that Dr. Sourav Banerjee from BRIC–NBRC received the HFSP Accelerator Grant to study molecular memory in single cells. This international project will use RNA-seq from living neuron and capture “RNA barcodes” encoding “synthetic memory” across scales, opening new directions for therapies targeting metabolic and immune disorders.

✨ Women in Science Spotlight
This March, we celebrate the inspiring women advancing neuroscience at BRIC-NBRC.
Dr Soumya Iyengar, Scientist-VII, explores how the brain learns to communicate. Using the songbird model, her research uncovers the neural basis of vocal learning and social behaviour, helping us understand how complex communication emerges in the brain.

It is our pleasure to see our article on the cover of @SfNJournals. Great cover art and project by @windowofnature. A new direction in the lab linking physical exercise to nerve regeneration. @DBT_NBRC@DBTIndia@India_Alliance. Original article: https://t.co/E2RzaFjRok
Congratulations to @singhpallavi96 for a successful defence of her thesis ✨🎉🎈🥳…A thesis loaded with lots of good stuff.. new methods, discovery and lots of new questions for the field.. a paper on the way (waiting to see online) 🤞 @DBT_NBRC
How animals detect the Earth’s magnetic field remains a mystery in sensory biology.
In a new Science study, researchers used whole brain activity mapping, tissue clearing, and light sheet microscopy to identify neuronal populations activated by magnetic stimuli in the pigeon. https://t.co/DV1MEXigKV
