We must never forget that Putin isn’t just another tough leader. He’s a murderous thug who ended Russia’s struggling democracy, ruled ruthlessly for 26 years, murdered any who stood in his way, and invaded both Georgia and Ukraine. He is the antithesis of American values.

For cynics who claim “American leaders do the same.” No, not like this. America has sins to its name, but our presidents don’t regularly have American journalists or opposition leaders poisoned or thrown out windows. They have operated, at least domestically, according to democratic norms. And when defeated, they step down.

People who admire bullies and strongmen are people who might be happy to see America’s free institutions washed away so they could finally get things done (but what things one wonders).

Thankfully, most Americans don’t embrace Putinism. We are still the land of the free, the home of the brave. For now. But as Tom Paine might have said were he alive today: Stay woke!
