Today, I met with Türkiye's new Health Minister, Mr. Kemal Memişoğlu – a valuable opportunity to review our work & explore new paths for partnership.
@WHO_Europe & @WHO_Turkiye are committed to work closely with 🇹🇷 partners to achieve shared goals in:
🔹Advancing Universal Health Coverage
🔹Preparing better for health emergencies
🔹Harnessing digital tools for better health
🔹Promoting healthier lifestyles
🔹Supporting mental health
🔹Improving vaccination rates
With a new @WHO_Turkiye Representative starting early in 2025, our joint efforts will gain even more momentum.

On 17-19 February 2025, @WHO_Europe and @saglikbakanligi will host a ministerial conference in #Istanbul, to strengthen earthquake preparedness & response in the #health sector.
Over 150 participants from 28 countries & territories across the Mediterranean & the Balkans will come together to share knowledge & enhance readiness.
Why Türkiye? The February 2023 earthquakes left a profound mark - 50,000 lives lost, 15 million impacted. Türkiye’s experience in recovery & rebuilding offers invaluable lessons for other countries to better prepare for future earthquakes & reduce their health impacts.

.@WHO_Europe will continue its partnership with 🇹🇷 within the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), supporting #health initiatives across member states.
I commend @TurkicStates for the visionary step of establishing TURKTRANSPLANT, a groundbreaking initiative to coordinate organ donation & transplantation across OTS states.
@WHO_Europe stands ready to support this vital effort.
Türkiye has shown incredible solidarity, evacuating 430 sick patients from #Gaza & their companions for urgent medical care. 🇹🇷 stands now as the largest recipient of patients from Gaza in our Region.
But the need is still vast. Countless patients, especially children, are waiting for life-saving care.
I call on all countries in the WHO/Europe Region to step up & increase medical evacuations from Gaza.
Every action counts.

Minister Memisoglu and I are committed to fighting #tobacco, which claims over 8 million lives globally each year & is alarmingly prevalent among youth in #Türkiye.
We also agreed to tackle the growing challenge of #obesity.
Together, we’ll create joint plans & drive their implementation to protect and improve public #health in 🇹🇷.

📍In Istanbul, @WHO_Europe Centre for Preparedness for Humanitarian & Health Emergencies & 🇹🇷 Ministry of Health gathered 90+ experts for a 2-day simulation to test #health responses to #earthquake.
💡Focus: governance, coordination, health info mgmt, comms, logistics & more.
We are closely monitoring the latest developments in #Syria.
Today, I had an insightful discussion with @rosacrestani, who leads our emergency office in #Gaziantep. Their cross-border operations to north-west Syria have been serving a lifeline for 5.1M people, 80% of whom need health support.
In these uncertain & challenging times, their work is more critical than ever. Stronger & more coordinated international support is essential.
Our Country Office in 🇹🇷 is doing tremendous work, positively impacting public health despite difficulties like last year's devastating earthquakes. I met today with @WHO_Turkiye staff to commend their efforts & assure them of my support in addressing any challenges they face.
