@mbeisen @CaliforniaFirst But those grants allow for overhead costs to be included in the budgets while NIH grants specifically do not. And yes, foundation funding is a tiny fraction of the U.S. research enterprise and has little impact on the research support universities have to provide.

The direct costs we are allowed to ask for are not unlimited. And while the cost of everything goes up, our grant budgets remain capped at 1990s amounts.
