Two weeks ago we launched Spelling Mode in the Project Read Tutor, and the response from classrooms has been incredible.
Spelling Mode is the first digital tool to analyze student spelling via touchscreen down to the letter-sound correspondence, built in collaboration with the @UFLiteracy team and aligned to the UFLI scope and sequence.
Encoding has a symbiotic relationship with decoding, and is where so many students struggle.
We think this is a fundamentally shift in how digital tools can support emerging readers and spellers.
Demo here:

How it works:
1. A target word is read aloud with a kid-friendly definition
2. The student writes it on screen with finger, stylus, or keyboard
3. The Tutor maps their attempt into Elkonin boxes
4. Students get targeted, phoneme-level feedback and advance once they've shown proficiency on their current UFLI lesson
It was a joy to join my friends @ValContessePhD and @HollyLanePhD in Gainesville this week.
We shared how are @ProjectReadAI and @UFLiteracy are narrowly tailoring AI to specific use cases that truly support teachers with some of the thorniest challenges in phonics instruction:
1) spelling analysis,
2) small group planning and
3) increasing/individualizing student practice

Choosing to partner with @vivramak and @ProjectReadAI was one of the best decisions we've made. They are in it for all the right reasons, which means the world to us at @UFLiteracy!
This linkedin post from a principal whose school uses @ProjectReadAI tutor made my day!
When we started Project Read AI in early 2023, we had two theses:
1) thoughtfully-applied AI could level up evidence-based literacy instruction for students and teachers
2) our tiny team (2-3 folks) could lean into internal efficiencies from AI to stay tiny and reduce overhead. we could then offer free and/or extremely affordable plans for schools at scale.
Besides the possibilities of what we could build together, this made partnering with @HollyLanePhD@UFLiteracy a natural fit
Still a long way to go, but we've finally started growing the team and I'm really excited about what's to come
Thank you for sharing @stacy_darrow Yes, our AI Tutor that listens to students read out loud and provides real-time phonics instruction, is free for the remainder of this school year!
To wrap up our literacy block, we tried @ProjectReadAI ‘s new language game generator!
Today we used language bingo as a fun connection activity - while also aligning perfectly with our @UFLiteracy lesson!
