I'm honored to become a fellow of @calacademy. This important institution has been a beacon of inspiration since my childhood. Together, we can address the challenges of our times, including the #Climatecrisis, #biodiversitydecline, #fire, and many other issues.
We want kids to be #ReadyForWhatever too! Download some fun coloring pages FREE from #HalterProject for your kids or classrooms. Talk to them about what their pets, livestock and equine need to evacuate quickly and if they need to shelter in place. https://t.co/QpR1oZNsez
I'm pleased to share one additional co-authored paper just released. There is more to come! Here, we call out restoration of human-ignited fire to 'untrammel' the wilderness. W/ @GrumpyUncleSean #RxFire#IndigenousRx#wilderness. https://t.co/kJX6JxyQqt
💥Sharing the latest - Realignment of federal environmental policies to recognize fire's role. Some of the strongest environmental policies fail to recognize the natural role of 🔥 #RxFire#IndigenousRx#beneficialfire. https://t.co/g00kMr33hn
My invited article Climate Resilience through Ecocultural Stewardship published in a special issue of PNAS https://t.co/Y4oqGyhNMX. Indigenous stewardship is central to addressing #wildfire#drought#biodiversity and #climate issues. We all must be active stewards.
More good fire with @Pyrogeographer with a cultural burn of deergrass on the ancestral lands of the Mechoopda people, now the grounds occupied by @ChicoState, teaching ecocultural stewardship to its students and staff. End 🧶
As the #MauiFires disaster continues to unfold, one of many things on my mind is the impact of debris flow and toxins into local ecosystems incl. coral reef system feedbacks. Foundational to Kanaka Maoli worldview and the big picture. #climateresilience#ecoculturalresilience.
Today Butte Creek is filled with turbid waters apparently due to a canal failure. The normally crystal clear water has about 1 in (2 cm) visibility as noted in the transparency tube. Sad to see on a spring run Chinook salmon stream. Underscores needs for #30x30@CalNatResources
@PacificFireSci's piece about the Hamakua Fire burning 30,000 acres in 1901 on Hawai'i provides a history shaping fire policy and practice in the region. Fire has long been a part of landscapes throughout the Pacific Basin and surrounding areas. https://t.co/5Za6jXEJTO
Beautiful video highlighting the braiding of #Indigenous#StoneyNakoda and Western ways of knowing with the reintroduction of #bison into Mînî Rhpa Mâkoche (@BanffNP) https://t.co/sMr0730qbP 🦬 Some #prescribedfire habitat #restoration areas also featured in the background 🔥
I spent this past week in DC working on conservation issues. The US, and much of the world would benefit from honoring and reciprocally stewarding nature with an inter-generational mindset, and recognize #earthdayiseveryday. I find resonance in this 1910 Theodore Roosevelt quote-
"There are no words that can tell the hidden spirit of the wilderness that can reveal its mystery, its melancholy and its charm. The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation.”
Looking forward to
Community Conversations: Land Stewardship virtual panel discussion with @thefirepoppy and Valenin Lopez w/ Amah Mutsun Land Trust this evening as part of the Terra Firma exhibit @NUMULosGatos. https://t.co/HSGdc6bL6H
@MichaelWWara@SenWhitehouse Hopefully there is prioritization for #RxFire and #IndigenousRx. Drawing from a model that seems to work well from Western Australia, my recollection is half the fire budget is directed to prevention #burning, and the remainder is suppression.
