#Ephemera from @britishmuseum#archives Charles Roach Smith (1807-90), antiquarian & Roman London expert & founding member of the British Archaeological Assoc - he kept detailed notes & diaries relating to his finds & collection, much of which is now in #BritishMuseum
@istevejansen@AndyOnyx1 Kate Bush is from Sidcup so I’m with @istevejansen on this one. And I couldn’t agree more about the magical thing that is ‘In Vogue’
Rare ivory statuette thought to depict the emperor Septimius Severus, found during excavations of Rome's Temple of Peace (Templum Pacis) in 2005. The 25cm artwork is a reminder that not all sculpture was in stone but also more rarely surviving wood, ivory, silver and even gold.
This rather unhappy looking British #Roman lady is part of the @britishmuseum collection. She was found in #Towcester. The eyes are set close together under a furrowed brow - what the story is behind her expression is lost in time! Probably wondering when January will end!
Our new exhibition, #MarginsOfEmpire in partnership with the @britishmuseum opens today!
Margins of Empire explores the often unseen role of people living in the Roman Empire who were not Roman citizens & examines their religious beliefs, craft skills and role in the military.
@10thLegio Sure the coins are great, but look at that wonderful, late antique soapstone vessel - the form, the handle(s?) the rough hacked lid - what a piece!
#TheDig was just lovely. A joy. Cannot fault any aspect of it. Except: it often occurs to me how difficult it is to watch so much TV and film and know I'll never be a part of it. Never.
So very sad to say that Dr Ian Jenkins OBE my colleague for many years at @britishmuseum died suddenly this weekend. A hugely knowledgeable scholar, a generous and (naughtily!) humorous man. He leaves an amazing legacy, but also a huge gap, professionally and personally.
My favourite R B find - Queenie, a British slave, marries her ex -master Barates from Palmyra, Syria. When she dies at South Shields he depicts her as a good homekeeper in eastern dress and laments her in Palmyrene. Yes she spun wool but she also controlled the strongbox.

The Roman Britain stamps are out! I've been working with @RoyalMail on these for the last couple of years - a real honour to be asked to be their special advisor. https://t.co/ioyMucqm4F
