@DnDBeyond If you want people to voluntarily choose OGL 1.2 over the OGL 1.0a, then explicitly make the OGL 1.0a irrevocable and don't try to deauthorize it.
Then make OneD&D and your fancy new VTT so attractive that people will voluntarily choose to use that platform.
I tried writing a video script about the OGL debacle but it was literally too depressing, so I scrapped it.
Hasbro is going to get what it wants. None of this other shit matters to them. They're going to convert D&D into a digital loot-box game, it will make them a lot of money.
"Whether you view the original #dnd OGL as a mystic talisman or smoke-and-mirrors, WotC appears to have committed an irreversible act of self-sabotage in trying to replace it — squandering the prestige accumulated over 20 years in a matter of weeks." https://t.co/Zc5yZDM4dJ
I reviewed WotC's draft Open Game License 1.2, and was asked to share my thoughts as an intellectual property/gaming lawyer. It's better than OGL 1.1, but still needs work. So-
Let's Take a Minute To Talk About #DnD's Updated Open Game License (OGL 1.2).

The number of people who don’t seem to understand the difference between rumor-mongering to increase visibility and serious journalism is a sad sign of our times, I guess.
@DnD_Shorts Your job? What i see is a dude who makes funny videos now assuming a role as a reporter without understanding what that entails or how to do it effectively. Talking with absolute certainty and then stamping it with “trust me the video coming will explain” isn’t good journalism.
I'm hoping the #ORC draft language comes out before the revised OGL language does.
This is a unique opportunity to seize the narrative for @paizo, @KoboldPress, @Chaosium_Inc, @GreenRoninPub, @LegendaryGamesJ, Rogue Genius Games, and the others who are involved in this t
@PoMoAnachro@DarkplaneDM This is also probably why one sees more focus on character builds in organized play where the story continuity between sessions can be sketchy to non-existent — and there’s no real way for players to affect the story outside of any single session.
@MadJayZero@obsdmd Just off the top of my head:
- ease of cross-linking and formatting
- the database setup is dead-simple and can be done “as you go” rather than having to be structured correctly up front
- Incredibly useful templates for display of database contents
@ThinkingDM@DarkplaneDM A year or so ago, I ran a Zweihander game. Starting character classes are randomized. While the players at first were somewhat nonplussed with this, the immersion and creativity in characterization was better than in the D&D campaigns I’ve played with the same players.
@hexcrawl@DarkplaneDM This is a true and a valuable part of the experience.
It would be interesting to consider whether there are alternative away-from-the-table avenues for player fun that better foster narrative character development and richer world-building.
@SwordCompass@DarkplaneDM There’s nothing wrong with that approach.
Often, though, I see players drawn to the mechanical options as the way of making their characters more unique, rather than focusing on personality and relationships with other characters and the social forces of the world they live in.
How can we assess whether a future #DnD#OGL meets the needs of creators, the community, and WotC? Here are the key criteria:
