Maiden flight-test of ‘Kusha’ Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile was successfully conducted from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha today. Some takeaways:

• Corporate outcomes alone should not determine director accountability. Directors should instead be judged by their own acts and omissions.
• Directors should disagree, but without being disagreeable. Important concerns should be reflected in the minutes.
• Good governance and integrity begin with management, not independent directors.
• Independent directors should not become management. If one crosses that line, fellow directors should gently call it out.
• Before every significant decision, ask: If this appeared on tomorrow's front page, could I explain it honestly, confidently, and without qualification?

When I say people are proud of indigenous weapons, I mean they don't feel the same emotional connection with imported ones. For many, depending on foreign equipment is humiliating (& i am one among them). A country of India's stature should be able to build what it needs, and armed forces are stakeholders in that.

In this regard, the Indian Navy stands out and that sense of ownership and pride is evident.

Musk: “You don’t need college to learn stuff. Everything is available basically for free. You can learn anything you want for free.”

Every lecture. Every textbook. Every framework ever written. Free on any screen in any country right now. The entire knowledge monopoly collapsed in a decade. Nobody updated the price tag.

Musk: “Colleges are basically for fun and to prove you can do your chores. But they’re not for learning.”

Strip the ivy and the branding. What’s underneath is a four-year obedience trial. Can this person follow instructions on a schedule without asking why.

Musk: “There is a value that colleges have, which is seeing whether somebody can work hard at something, including a bunch of annoying homework assignments, and still do their homework assignments.”

That is the entire six-figure value proposition. Not what you know. Not what you can build. Whether you can be managed. The establishment doesn’t need you educated. It needs you domesticated.

Musk: “If you’re trying to do something exceptional, you must have evidence of exceptional ability. I don’t consider going to college evidence of exceptional ability.”

The system doesn’t produce exceptional. It produces manageable. It takes the most creative years of your life and teaches you to wait for instructions. That is not education. That is containment.

Musk: “Gates is a pretty smart guy, he dropped out. Jobs is pretty smart, he dropped out. Larry Ellison, smart guy, he dropped out.”

They didn’t leave because they couldn’t keep up. They left because the ceiling was underground.

8 billion people now carry the same library in their pocket. The one these institutions charged a lifetime of debt to access.

The only product the university still sells is the belief that you need one.

The economic and demographic effects of corruption.

Cost of land in our urban areas is far higher than what our GDP per capita would dictate. The ratio of land value to per capita GDP is probably higher in India than anywhere else. As an example, land prices in Chennai or Bengaluru rival that of cities like New York which has a vastly higher per capita GDP.

The key reason?

First, vast sums of political corruption money is parked in real estate. This raises real estate prices and high real estate prices affect everything downstream.

Second, corruption in building approvals and the like - the famous DTCP - raises construction costs, on top of already higher real estate costs.

Third, corruption in private school regulatory compliance enforcement raises school fees.

Fourth, corruption in private hospital regulatory compliance enforcement raises health care costs.

Fifth, household goods need sales outlets and those pay higher rents due to high real estate prices and construction costs.

So housing, education, healthcare and household goods - all of these now cost higher.

As a direct consequence, the economic burden on the average person gets worse. Young people, facing all these costs, postpone marriage, and postpone children or have fewer children.

That directly affects our demographics.

While this issue exists in many parts of India, Tamil Nadu, being the most urbanized of the bigger states, is particularly hit hard.

So corruption is becoming an existential threat to our society.

If you worry about the super-low birth rate in Tamil Nadu, way below replacement, understand that corruption raising our cost of living is one of the major causes, not the only cause, but a big one in our context.
