“Of note, no other country has a Triple Lock. It is highly unusual. That is because defence, like taxation, is regarded as a national competence.”~ @BerryCathal
I agree with Cathal, Ireland are not competent on defence, at it has an effects on how they are viewed across Europe.
Few of us have access to full information on how Trump lost the Iran War. But we can all see the fiasco Trump has made of the 250th anniversary celebrations. Watching Trump fail at something easy helps illustrate why he was doomed to mess up anything difficult.
You wont save anything. It will cost you...
Backup generation for the 2/3 of the time it's not windy
Extra grid costs because you need lots of these to replace a single gas power station and it's miles away from existing infrastructure
Extra grid costs for real time balancing due to moment to moment variability in output
And not forgetting the ££££ in subsidies over 20 years to build it in the first place
This is a category error.
Yes, long-run cervical/uterine cancer mortality trends can be hard to interpret. Coding changes, “uterus not otherwise specified” categories, screening uptake, treatment improvements, and changes in death certification all matter. Epidemiologists know this. They do not simply draw a line from 1950 to today and declare victory.
But that is not the main evidence base for HPV vaccination.
The strongest evidence for HPV vaccine effectiveness comes from post-rollout cohort data: compare girls offered vaccination at younger ages with older, less-vaccinated cohorts, then track HPV infection, CIN2/3, cervical cancer incidence, and now early mortality signals.
That is a very different question from “Can we perfectly reconstruct every historical uterine cancer death category over 70 years?”
The fact that cervical cancer mortality had already fallen before HPV vaccination is not an argument against the vaccine. It is evidence that screening, earlier detection, and treatment worked. HPV vaccination adds something different: upstream prevention of persistent infection with high-risk HPV types before precancer and cancer develop.
Public health often works in layers.
Clean water did not make antibiotics useless.
Seatbelts did not make airbags useless.
Screening did not make HPV vaccination useless.
A serious analysis would say:
Cervical cancer mortality fell substantially before HPV vaccination, largely because of screening and treatment.
Historical mortality coding requires caution.
HPV vaccination is evaluated most cleanly using vaccinated vs less-vaccinated birth cohorts after rollout.
Those studies show large reductions in vaccine-type HPV infection, high-grade cervical precancer, cervical cancer incidence, and emerging reductions in deaths.
So the “blockage of analysis” claim is overstated. The analysis has been done — just not by pretending a single historical mortality curve answers every causal question.
The real misunderstanding here is treating “cervical cancer was already declining” as if it refutes a vaccine designed to reduce the remaining preventable burden.
It doesn’t.
As always we need to actually see what they're proposing, but in truth the T45 fleet has plenty of life left in them, so if it's just delaying the T83 it shouldn't be a major issue.
I'd be more worried about them slowing down the already glacial T26 program to keep BAE in work.
Daycare calls me. That's never good.
For them.
Daycare: "your son hurt his elbow and won't move his arm. Can you come take him to a doctor's office?"
Me (ex Special Forces Medic): "A real doctor is on the way to you now. I am 6 mikes out. Alert me of status changes."
I arrive at daycare. I locate the patient. 21 month old male. Scene is not safe. I drag the patient to cover and concealment behind a seesaw, away from the other small terrorists in the AO.
I begin my assessment. Blood sweep negative for massive hemorrhage. Mental status: conscious and verbal but confused (answers "dada" when asked for blood type). One breath every 2 seconds. Bilateral rise and fall of the chest. Strong carotid pulse, strong bilat radial pulse.
Teeth and tongue intact no blood no mucus no dip or foreign objects. Eyes PERRLA, negative JVD/trach deviation, C-spine intact upon palpation.
Heart sounds strong upon auscultation. Percussion negative for hemo-T. Abdominal quads normal upon palpation. Pelvis negative for book sign.
Arms and legs negative for crepitus. However, Patient indicates discomfort in right arm upon palpation and supination/flexion of the elbow.
Nursemaid's elbow.
I begin interventions. Supination/flexion technique complete at 1215. Palpable clunk on successful reduction. I write the time on his chest in Sharpie. I tape a popsicle to his hand and tell the patient to suck but do not bite/chew. I write "1 x popsicle (10g sugar)" on his chest in Sharpie.
I reassess the patient after performing interventions then package the patient for handoff to daycare/higher level of care. I yell at daycare over the Blackhawk in my head: "21 month old male!!! Nursemaids elbow!!! Treated with supination/flexion technique at 1215!!! Patient has 1 x popsicle onboard!!"
Daycare: "sir please leave."
Me: "you should have called my wife."
@domhauschild As long as the T83s are just being pushed back a bit, it’s not too much of a blow
The T45s are getting through their PIP, will be getting Sea Ceptor, and Dragonfire too
A few years might also clarify what naval drones can and can’t do, and so may save us backing a losing horse
BREAKING: Trump has released photographic proof that his American State Fair is absolutely packed. Some are calling it the largest crowd ever assembled.
#SharpieGate
Half a million views and some responses are utterly absurd, so let’s get it straight.
It’s not because of Net Zero.
It’s not because of money-saving.
It’s not because of Brexit.
It’s because they can’t run them cool enough, because they haven’t been specified for this heat.
HORRIFIC: Hamas terrorists threatened displaced families in Gaza yesterday, warning them that they would be expelled from their tents if they took part in the protests. Anyone who participates will be kicked out of the camp.
These are families who have already lost their homes, their neighborhoods, and everything they owned. Now, Hamas is using the last shelter they have left as a tool of intimidation to silence them.
This is what Hamas calls "resistance": threatening displaced Palestinians with homelessness simply because they demand dignity, freedom, and the right to protest.
DOWN WITH HAMAS!
"New evidence has emerged that[RFK] Jr was on a vaccine-related “mission” when he visited Samoa ahead of a deadly measles outbreak in 2019, ...US health secretary lied to the US Senate when he said the trip had “nothing to do with vaccines”."
https://t.co/dlKlPo1Tep
The Guardian’s report is mainly about credibility and accountability: RFK Jr. told the Senate the Samoa trip had “nothing to do with vaccines,” but newly disclosed records from someone traveling with him describe a vaccine-related mission. Given Samoa’s subsequent measles catastrophe, that discrepancy is politically and ethically significant.
