I’m doing a series for Lent on 1 John. 1 John was written to warn the church concerning religious violence. It is violence based on hatred of one’s neighbor, and this is hatred people think is endorsed by God.

In the context of this quote, paragraph 139 of Erasmus's "Ratio," religion is defined as love, peace, and concord. He specifically renounces defining religion as ceremony.

@LacanianC@kevinmyoung I’ve shied away from using that explanation for this very reason. The connection to child sacrifice in the Hebrew Scriptures makes a lot more sense and seems more compelling.
