One of the most overlooked parts of preseason:
Teach your locker room standards BEFORE the season starts.
Don’t assume players just “know.”
Show them:
how gear should be hung up
where helmets go
how lockers are cleaned
laundry expectations
who handles cleanup
what “done right” actually looks like
Bring them into the locker room.
Show pictures.
Give examples.
Walk them through it.
Then remind them:
A lot of players came before you and helped build this locker room.
They wore the colors.
They cleaned it.
They respected it.
They left it better than they found it.
Now it’s your turn.
Locker room standards may seem small…
…but the locker room culture speaks volumes about a program. And it often times carries over to Friday night.

Please please don’t get rid of HUDL classic…

Coaches get ready, HUDL classic is going away.
“Speed is the quality you lose the fastest.”
In only 5-7 days if untrained
Tennessee football performance director Derek Owings discusses how important consistent speed training is
Young athletes: sprint consistently, 2-3 times per-week!
🗣️ You MUST lift in-season… you wanted context, so let’s talk about it!
🔑 Read the below… change how you look at in-season training
1️⃣ “I don’t want to be sore.” Understand context. Understand protocol that can be taken in a GOOD program by a GOOD coach who can have you work in a way that gets or maintains results without frying you!! Sub-maximal strength work, isometrics, limited sprint volume. All work
2️⃣ “I don’t have time. I have games or practices 5x per week.” Please keep your two off days as off days. Big hack? Do speed or jump work before games or practices to prime you to be ready to go! Do sub max strength work after games or practices. You’ll already be warmed up AND odds are the sub max lifting will be less intense than sport so it’ll actually be a cool down of sorts
3️⃣ “Why lift after games or practices?” It’s simple. While you may think you’re better off not doing too much on one day, it’s actually better to stack higher intensities on the same days so you can use days you’re off from your sport to be COMPLETE rest days
4️⃣ “I’ll get hurt from doing too much.” Again, moderation & quality programming are keys here. A good program will actually HELP you stay resilient, avoid burnout & counter the high amounts of reps you’re getting in your sport as a way to stay strong & healthy
5️⃣ “Why can’t I just wait until the off-season?” Of course you can. But let me ask you this. The in-season is probably the biggest chunk of time you have in your year. Can you really afford to NOT train for several months? You’ll start your off-season just building back to what you were vs. Improving. Then you’ll lose it all again come in-season 🤦♂️

Geno Auriemma shares a must-listen on body language and how he coaches it.
"We put a huge premium on body language."
"If your body language is bad, you will never get in the game. Ever. I don't care how good you are."
Your body language screams. It sets the tone for yourself and others.
It starts with your posture, your eye contact, and your energy. They're always communicating something - whether you realize it or not.
And here's why this matters more than ever:
"Recruiting enthusiastic kids is harder than it's ever been. Every kid watches TV, and they watch the NBA or the NFL and what they see is people just being really cool. So they think that's how they're gonna act."
The attitude comes before the ability.
"Recruiting kids that are really upbeat and loving life and love the game and have this tremendous appreciation for when their teammates do something well - that's hard. That's really hard."
He proved he means it with one of his best players:
"Somebody says, 'Well, you benched Stewy for 35 minutes in the Memphis game.' Yeah, I did. Stewy was acting like a 12-year-old, so I put her on the bench and said, 'Sit there.'"
No exceptions. Not even for All-Americans.
"I'd rather lose than watch kids play the way some kids play. I'd rather lose."
That's the standard his teams live.
"When I watch game film, I'm checking what's going on on the bench. If somebody's asleep over there, if somebody doesn't care, if somebody's not engaged in the game - they will never get in the game, ever."
Body language isn't a small thing. It's everything.
It's taking ownership of yourself, your attitude, and your actions.
It represents how you want to be as a teammate.

As an AD, I implemented a strength program where every athlete lifts in season with their current team. I challenged coaches to scientifically prove it was not beneficial. No one could.
It eliminated the tug of war over athletes and reinforced what we believe.

Kirby Smart on managing his roster while prepping for the playoff:
"Everybody's announcing what they're doing. I'm announcing that I'm going in the portal. I'm announcing that I'm re-signing. How about you announce that you're getting better and you're going to practice...?"
