Experimenting with S3TC/BC1/DXT1 compression. The idea is to intentionally leak channel data into each other to reduce blockiness and get at least some data instead of averaged out 4x4 blocks.

There's a new paper out in JCGT that proposes a super simple modification of existing microfacet models to implement a retroreflection model. What's interesting is that despite being insanely simple, the model fits measured data better than you'd think!

About 3.5 years ago I did some experiment to improve the behavior of microfacet normals at glancing angles. Many surfaces become highly reflective even though having high roughness. Check the discussion in the thread. Here is my implementation reusing equations you already have:

At its core MeshBlend is a shader and it scales with the internal render resolution. Running a 4090 at 2560x1440 gives me 0.07-0.09 ms per frame on the low quality preset. Which I feel is pretty damn good!
Balancing quality and performance has always been my main goal. Targeting ~0.2-0.4 ms on a PS5 while delivering a quality acceptable for AAA projects.
It's a never ending battle. Always chasing any 0.01 ms I can shave off!🥳
