Sideloading is not banned.
It is being made harder on purpose.

On September 30, certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand will block the normal installation of apps from developers who have not been verified by Google.

The workaround is the Advanced Flow:
developer options, confirmation, reboot, a 24-hour wait, then another setting.

ADB still works.
But the real question is no longer just “Play Store or not”.

We're well into the process of converting the Messaging app included in GrapheneOS into a modern app. We'll be making a new release later today with a completely overhauled user interface written in Android Compose. We've made a massive amount of other improvements and bug fixes beyond that too.

In the longer term, we plan to add support for RCS including support for the standard end-to-end encryption (E2EE) via Messaging Layer Security (MLS). Currently, RCS including E2EE is available on GrapheneOS via Google Messages. We want to avoid the need to use Google Messages for RCS eventually.

RCS on Android is currently implemented with code across the OS, Google Messages and Google Play services. Our plan is to start by making an equivalent to the portion in Google Messages. It would initially require sandboxed Google Play for RCS activation, etc. but we plan to implement that too..

RCS isn't an open platform in practice. It isn't even as open as SMS/MMS. It heavily depends on proprietary Google and carrier infrastructure in practice. We can start by replicating Google's approach and then we can work on only using carrier services for carriers where it's actually supported.

We're also going to be overhauling or fully replacing the rest of the AOSP apps in the near future. AOSP Gallery is incredibly outdated and is being entirely replaced. AOSP Keyboard may be similar. We recently hired a bunch of new people and will be hiring more so our progress will be accelerating.

In the past, our focus was nearly entirely on the base OS rather than bundled apps with alternatives available. We've heavily ramped up the resources we're investing into the bundled apps. We'll also be scaling up our work on the base OS too. More donations will enable us to hire even more people.

Event: The U.S. Embassy has noted a significant increase in diarrheal illness across Cuba, associated with the continuing degradation of the water and energy infrastructure. This degradation affects water supply, and food storage and temperature control. Recent cases have included E. coli, norovirus, Shigella, and other gastrointestinal pathogens.

Avoiding Foodborne Illness:

Be cautious of meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy, and other perishable foods that may have been inadequately stored.
Avoid foods that appear to have been sitting at room temperature for extended periods.
Avoid raw or improperly washed vegetables.
Be cautious of food cooked and then cooled, stored, or reheated, as improper temperature control can allow pathogens or toxins to develop.
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating and after using the restroom. Hand sanitizer may be less effective against certain gastrointestinal pathogens, including norovirus.

Water Safety:

Use only water known to be safe for drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, and cooking.
Use bottled or appropriately treated water; check that bottle seals are intact before opening.
Avoid ice unless the water source is known to be safe.
Do not use untreated tap water to prepare beverages or food.
Be aware that contamination can occur when food, utensils, and surfaces are washed with contaminated water.

If You Become Ill:

Stay hydrated, especially with frequent diarrhea or vomiting. Most illnesses are self-limited and improve within several days.
Seek medical attention for persistent or severe diarrhea, bloody stools, high fever, significant abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, or symptoms not improving.
Common medications (e.g., acetaminophen, ibuprofen, antibiotics) are frequently unavailable in Cuba; consider bringing your own supply.

Mullvad da un paso atrás en su DNS público y apuesta por reforzar a Quad9

Mullvad, uno de los proveedores de VPN con más peso dentro de la comunidad de privacidad, va a cerrar sus servidores públicos de DNS cifrado el próximo 2 de noviembre. Los ofrecía desde 2022, de forma gratuita, tanto para sus propios usuarios de VPN como para cualquiera que quisiera resolver sus consultas DNS sin pasar por su proveedor de internet. A partir de esa fecha, ese servicio deja de existir.

El motivo no es económico ni una presión regulatoria, es más simple: mantener esa infraestructura duplicaba un trabajo que ya hace bien otra organización, Quad9, la fundación sin ánimo de lucro detrás de uno de los resolutores DNS centrados en privacidad más usados del mundo. En vez de seguir compitiendo por el mismo terreno, según el propio anuncio de Mullvad, la compañía prefiere retirarse y destinar recursos económicos a fortalecer a Quad9.

Para quien use Mullvad Browser con la configuración de fábrica, el cambio pasará desapercibido, la migración a Quad9 se hace sola. Quien haya tocado la configuración de DNS a mano (en el sistema operativo, en el router, en una app o en el propio navegador) sí tendrá que mover sus ajustes antes del 2 de noviembre, igual que quienes usen los perfiles de configuración de iOS o macOS de Mullvad, que dejarán de funcionar ese día. Si solo usas su VPN tal cual, sin haber tocado nada de DNS, no cambia nada para ti, ese tráfico ya se resuelve dentro de su propia red.

Detrás de lo que parece un simple recorte hay una decisión poco habitual en este sector, una empresa privada prescindiendo de un servicio propio para reforzar a un tercero independiente y sin ánimo de lucro.

GrapheneOS a commencé à le porter... en une semaine, une bonne partie du système tournait... Puis ça s’est arrêté !

Une protection importante a disparu

Depuis le Pixel 8, la puce pouvait étiqueter la mémoire et couper net une grosse partie des attaques qui passent par des failles classiques

Here is the password manager I use every day: KeePassDX.

Local, open source (GPLv3), no ads.

How it works, simply:
🔹 Everything lives in one encrypted file (.kdbx)
🔹 I unlock it with the master password plus the key file
🔹 No account with the password app. No vendor server. KeePassDX itself does not need the internet

My setup:
the database sits in Nextcloud.
On the phone I installed the Nextcloud app so KeePassDX can open that file.

Day to day:
🔹 Autofill
🔹 Passkeys, OTP (2FA)
🔹 Biometric unlock
🔹 The same database opens in KeePass / KeePassXC on the PC

One caveat:
KeePassDX does not sync by itself. I use Nextcloud for that.
The Play Store Pro version does not add security. It is mostly themes, in exchange for supporting the project.

F-Droid is the path the project recommends (Libre build).
