New study shows former steroid users may retain long term benefits in muscle mass even after stopping
A new study (PMID: 37466198) assessed myonuclei density in muscles of non-users, former users, & current steroid users
Muscle cells are the only multi-nucleated cells. It’s believed the more myonuclei they contain, the greater the overall potential for muscle growth

We often THINK we know what it takes to be the best.
And we're often wrong.
What it actually takes, the mindset & approach are different than the social media version of excellence.
Here are 3 counter-intuitive keys to performing well from the actual world's greatest athlete:
High-rep vs Low-rep strength training for endurance athletes 👇
A systematic review & meta-analysis w/ @FrankNugent10 and others
Summary and some thoughts below
Stacking average days for a long time gets results.
Don't believe me?
For 3 years I had an athlete who made it to world class rate every workout as:
1- Poor
2- Average
3- Good/Above Average
Here's the results:
Put another way...
Mon - I will do 2hrs w/VO2max intervals
Tue - I will do a 4hr long ride
Wed - I will do a threshold session
❌
Mon - I will do the best thing for my fitness*
Tue - I will do the best thing for my fitness*
Wed - I will do the best thing for my fitness*
✅
*Note: Depending on daily metrics, sometimes "the best thing for my fitness" will be sleeping in! Not being OK with this is a big limiter.

Important - a meta-analysis of 53 studies finds that resistance training not only boosts physical fitness in school-age kids but also enhances their cognition, academic results, and classroom behaviour. ( We need physical activity every day in schools secondary and primary )
Coaching v consulting...
Can you follow a plan?
Some are simply too independent-minded to be willing to follow a plan.
You can go back and forth on how the athlete would have followed the plan if they believed in it more and had more "buy in" but real talk...
some folks are just too plain headstrong to follow a plan from somebody else.
Some folks always think they know better.
In fact, just the thought of somebody else instructing them will cause them to rebel.
Be honest with yourself: Are you coachable?
If not, employ a coach to consult with you, not coach you.
You'll pay more per hour and get less emotional investment from the coach, but you'll save yourself and them a lot of headaches.
This research area has come a long way since we published this paper. New technology is now being used, and existing technology is being used in more representative situations.
